Z4MR - Was going to sell, now considering keeping

Hi all,

I’ve just bought a 981 Porsche Boxster S, fully loaded with all the options, PDK, Sport Chrono, Porsche Sports Exhaust, adaptive/adjustable suspension, torque vectoring diff etc.... which is a great car.

I bought it to replace my TVR and Z4M. I’ve now sold the TVR, but I’m wondering whether I should keep the Z4M as well as the Porsche. I really can’t decide!

I don’t particularly need to sell it, but the ongoing costs of running two cars (especially with expensive tax and insurance on the Z4M) is not ideal. I have just had Inspection II done, so at least that’s the big cost out of the way. I’m wondering what values will do over the next year or two.

Mine is a nice example, low miles, I believe it has 43k miles on it now. I rarely use it, so that won’t rise by much. Good condition throughout and in a nice rare colour – Monaco Blue, with extended leather interior. If I did put it up for sale, it would be through my friend’s specialists dealership on SOR with a warranty, so I would like to think he could get a good dealer price for it. What do you think would be a reasonable price to put it up for in the spring? And do you think prices will remain strong over the next year or so?

The 981 is one of the best cars you can buy. IMO the Z4M doesn't come close so wouldn't be much of a decision for me.

At the end of the day you like the car and combo. If you changed your mind it probably wont be as easy to get it back like the previous time.

At the moment values are lower and the market seems to to be slowing its probably not the best time to sell. Spring would be better but I dont see the market growing at the pace it has in recent years.

That being said I dont think you will loose money either so its probably a heart over head decision if you can afford to keep it.

Haha, yes indeed! Last time I sold it, it was out of necessity. I was buying our first house and it had to go to raise the deposit. I was fortunate to buy it back. I do love the 981 and I don’t think the Z4M will get a great deal of use, but it would be cool to keep it, if I can convince myself that it will hold its value, or even better, go up in value!

I’m going to get hung, drawn and quartered for saying this Dan but, keep it, then when the 981 becomes a little familiar, take the M out and you’ll realise what a relative dinosaur it is next to the Boxster, you’ll be grinning like a bafoon when you go out in the pork.

I’m serious, familiarity breeds contempt. Keep it, it would be a fun now and again blast and they might start to rise again in a year or two.

I was tempted to keep mine when I bought the 911, and I would not have lost any money on it (or rather gained money on it during that time), but in practical terms I would not have driven it anymore.

In summary, it will be almost a "free" car during the time you have both, but you won't use it so not sure what your parking is like it might get in the way.

Storage is a pain. Only have garage space for one, and don't want to keep it outside. Could take it to my dad's, as he has garage space over there. I could swap cars every fortnight or so!

I think this is the issue with these cars.

If they sit they still need to be serviced and looked after regardless of mileage. The longer they are left the faster consumables wear etc With the car being 11 years old it probably needs its engine mounts doing, brake lines etc etc then in 2 years it will need another service then as you say tax etc then when you figure out how much the maintenance/tax is per mile it starts to just make less sense. Even if prices do rise the cost to keep it in pristine condition that a perspective buyer would be willing to pay top £ for just the above is more than the price increase then you would have to get the money you want for it for it to make sense. You could sorn it but then you wont drive it...

The trend recently is barely any cars are moving because lots have bad history and are still top book. The ones that do I dont think have been getting near the ask except the ones that generally have been priced well.

The thing with the 981 is that it is basically a Z4m and E89 in one at the flick of a button and imo better to drive better looking and the level of equipment dwarfs the pair. Plus they bark at the heel of 95% of cars including the bigger brothers and are better in the twisties.

Yes, it is such a good car that it just outshines everything else. Spec on mine is huge too, I've just checked the original invoice.....

Certainly got a lot of toys to rival most other cars.

But the Z4M does have something a bit special about it. It's a very raw and back to basics sports car, and it makes a great noise. I don't think it makes sense to sell it over the winter anyway, so I'll keep it until the spring and see how I feel then.

Sounds lovely. So hard to find a 981 with that sort of spec because your well into 911 territory when buying new so many have strange specs. Why you wouldnt spec the sports exhaust on these cars is beyond me they sounds so so good but many dont.

The PASM adaptive suspension is fantastic and the PDCC on the 911s is just incredible. Not sure it was an option on the 981. But the two combined allows the car to do things it really shouldn't be able to. Works perfectly on the autobahn as the roads are negatvely cambered so when going round a corner the road naturally pushes you into the ditch especially at the speeds you can travel. The PDCC and PASM basically act together to push the car up so its flat and you can push on. The 997 on the other hand with PASM your really fighting with the wheel. Its like the roads were designed for right hand car driving the opposite way round.

Bit of an insider joke but you know youve got a special one when the air vents, seatbelts and speaker grills are leather

Lovley but crazy expensive options when all totaled. Getting every piece covered in leather is like a 10k options. Mental but would love it

I don't believe PDCC was an option on the 981, no. PASM and the PTV seem to work really well together. It's amazing how well it goes round corners!

My advice would be to keep the Z4M and give it sometime, as nice as the porks are they become very normal after some time purely because of how good they are (if that makes sense)

Would love a GTS and I did consider it but it was a lot of money. More than I’d have comfortable to be tied up in one car! Plus mine has all the GTS spec, just lacking the 10hp. It’s plenty quick enough!
