Z4MR buying advice please?

Just tipping my toe in the water but may look at purchasing a Z4M next year?

I worked for a BMW dealers many years ago when the Z4 was launched and ran a 2.5 and later a 3.0 Z4 company car. They were both lovely cars and I enjoyed them immensely but left the company before the M version was introduced so I didn't get a chance to drive one. I did drive an M3 with that beautiful engine though and this is the big attraction for me!

I am looking for a car that has way to much power and gives the most pleasure when being driven sideways! :thumbsup:

My questions really are to the wise who own these cars on what they are like to live with everyday? Are there any common problems to look out for? What improvements are considered to be important? I wondered what is the general view on how fast values are depreciating and has the cost of road tax been a major factor?

Any advice will be gratefully appreciated! :D

Service history is massively important, the running in service where as you probably know the running in oils are changed to regular oils, then oil and brake fluid every 2 years regardless of mileage and what the service indicator says, for me it doesn't have to be BMW history now but for others it's a must, I'm sure some of the guys will tell you about BMW warranty too which has paid dividends for them.

Plenty of guys have modified their cars a little to a lot so it depends how deep your pockets are I suppose :thumbsup:

With regard to value they represent magnificent " bang for your buck" IMO get yourself a good one and you'll never even question the astronomical cost of RFL or the MPG, mine is a now and again car but some are daily drivers so you will get plenty of advise on day to day running there :driving:

I love the Z4M...

I have tried pretty much every other sports car out there and for the money there isnt anything else out there that thrills you like the Z4M.

Common issues.....

Wheels always seem to need a refurb...Easily addressed..

Some people dont like the gearchange,its a bit agricultural and needs "timing" correctly but is good once you used to it..

Roof motors can go if the drain offs get blocked and flood the motor out..


My ONLY gripe is the standard suspension... The springs are awful and way to firm and lack compliance. Again its an easy fix and get some Eibachs or H&R's.. I got the latter and its absolutly transformed the car..

If driving looking out the side windows is your thing,the car will not disapoint.. Im driving mine all the time with DSC off and sport button pressed and to say its a little "lively" is an underestimation....

Prices... In spring im thinking you will get a roady for 11k minimum-16k for the best with low miles... The tax is a pain,but for the price of a pint of beer extra a week i will forfeit that for the sheer pleasure the car brings..

I agee that the S54 makes the car,the 2.5 and 3.0 are good engines and relativly pokey but the M engine is an absolute peach and alters the driving experience massively.

Spring morning,top down with the engine singing and it doesnt get any better IMHO

Go for it,you will not be unhappy with your decision... :thumbsup:

The M roadster is a great car & as has been said the gearbox is a bit challenging, but if you love sideways it will be right up your street the rearend is lively which suits me fine :)

If I am honest I wish the car was a little lighter in weight but then I have come out of a light plastic fantastic TVR, the engine plays a big part in the experience & it is epic! :D

As has been said they are great value for money for the performance & top down motoring really adds to the driving experience, I don't think you would be disappointed if you got one :thumbsup:

Thank you so much for the advice. I know now that should I take the plunge, the car will deliver exactly what I want. Ever since I drove an early Z3MC without traction control I knew I wanted an "M" car in some guise! The car was so well balanced but the rear end was always stepping-out! I didn't mind at all as the car was so controllable it was an absolute joy!

For me though enjoying the wind in your hair and having a great sounding engine is what driving a sports car is all about so the Z4MR could be the one? :thumbsup:

I was over Knutsford way on Friday in the Z....

Actually in Mobberley visiting a mate... Its nice over that way..
 
Yes it is ,did you get too the bulls head in mobberly ? Great pub and food is fantastic ,shame all the blinds were down at the maclarren show room as they were screening the F1 .there always very accommodateing there quite happy for you to take pictures etc next time your over this way let me know

hahah good plaaann
another forumer has a titanium silver MR as well and he lives not too far away either...so yes a dark silver and silver MR cruise sounds ace :thumbsup:
 
I'm from bear town originally and now have a Silver Z4M .. Could make this sometime .. Perhaps for tatton sports car show
 
Sounds like a plan lets keep in touch and make it happen there's a few good shows at Tatton Park inc the BMW ,the classic etc
 
Will do - and a visit to the macca dealership.

Been to Tatton a number of times and had my old MX-5 on the OC stand one year.
