Once they reach 40 years old, they get free classic car status
Incorrect, it was spearheaded by Conservative petrol head Alan Clarke, who had a fleet of classic cars, the idea was to give cars over 25 years old free road tax to encourage the preservation of older models. I had a 1974 Rover and was waiting for my free tax and then Labour won the election and Mr Brown immediately put a stop to it, so the only cars tax exempt of this type are pre 1973, your z4 will not be tax exempt in2047, sorry.[/quote
It is now a rolling exemption......cars that are 40 years old and over are tax exempt, I enclose a quote from the DVLA website.
**The measure extends the scope of the existing 40 year rolling Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) exemption for classic vehicles permanently so that on the 1 April each year vehicles constructed more than 40 years before the 1 January that year will automatically be exempt from paying VED.**
That's a new one to me, thank you for the correction, don't hold your breath mind the rules of car tax are changing yet again in April just to confuse those who are not confused enough already. :(

As already mentioned, it's a rolling 40 year cut off, I follow the classic car scene :P

[post]1393472[/post] I always said I would never own a car with the top level of tax levied against it, now I am going to have two from the looks of it. Hey ho, you only live once...!! H.

No, not unless your Z4MR was registered before 1 March 2006 otherwise it will be in the £500+ club!

But your 330 Ci will still be Band K so £295 a year (same as my E86 and my E46 325ti)! Ouch!

Sorry Mr Tidy, I wasn't very clear. The Zed is £515, the 330 Ci is £295 but I am shopping for an E92 M3 for the missus at the moment to replace her Santa Fe.... That will be £1325 on tax alone in my house....
