Evening all
I've posted this in newbie area as well as newbie:)

I'll post pics of baby when on laptop next
Question::::::

My Z4mr only 10k on clock and Bmw north oxford say best seen
I've got a porous small area on rack
This leaks fluid under full lock
So new rack:(
Question:
Mc has the CSL rack but with quicker 12.8:1 ratio
Mr has the E46M3 rack but with 13.7:1 ratio

The subframes on cars are identical part number wise etc
I spent most of day at Bmw and all m techs and parts guys all funding info out

MR rack 32 13 7 836 845 is £2700 inc vat
MC rack 32 10 7 838 795 is £1380 inc vat

No one can tell me if MC rack will fit my MR
a few have put in E46m3 but I want to know if anyone knows if will fit and or need coding?
As Bmw are going to try and find out
And all we could come up with is coupe has faster rack as most coupes driven harder than roadsters
Plus price is availability as CSL /CS and MC use rack so more made?

Anyone?

All the different models you mention - 46M, CSL/CS, Z4MC and Z4MR have different racks i.e the MC doesn't have a CSL rack; the MC has an MC rack. The ratio is the easiest way to identify the racks as the ZF part numbers are unique to the ZF parts system. The gearing internally maybe different amongst the racks and therefore things like maximum lock maybe different between coupe and roadster. The feel of the rack may also be different due to the internal design which affects fluid flow at different points i.e linear/varying ratio etc

Also just because it's faster doesn't mean it's better. I fitted a CSL rack to my old E46M and changed it back to the stock as I found the CSL rack twitchy for my driving style. You have to be more accurate with your inputs and although it allows you to catch the tail quicker, you can also unbalance the car more easily.

I just can't believe the price difference though, is your car under warranty? If not have you tried other parts sources like Bmminiparts?

Hey buddy
The input for my post was in black and white from Bmw of which the techs are reading on their system

I'll try to take a pic of the info
But def said that's where racks came from
But ratios different
Go figure
Ratio I can handle as been spanking around in a M235i of which has a rapid turn in
But I loved it
But my warranty co will pay £2k towards rack
So me rest inc fitting and full geo

None of could answer why the difference was £1.3k??
So if only that's it's quicker in MC but will directly fit my MR I'll happily fit that one
But need to know if will fit and will it need programming ???
Cars;)

Apart from the fact that all the racks are steering racks, I see no reason how the coupe rack is a CSL rack. It's a bit like saying the coupe wheels are the csl wheels but smaller with a different design....

I have held both the standard 46M and CSL racks in my hands next to each other. Visually and quality/weight etc they're identical.

I have no experience with North Oxford BMW but possibly get a second opinion on the whole matter?

When I fitted a CSL rack to my standard 46M all that was needed was to flash the steering angle sensor. No coding was needed.

Haha love comparison
I'll get mits on paper that stated this and put up for you

Ref opinion this is why thought would try here
As if fits exactly etc and it just needs angle sensor flashed they can do it

But I don't know if will fit etc
But as £1300 diff in price id like to know:)

Not sure if you've read this thread

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=67644

I have read that one
But doesn't answer my question sadly either in that post
But kind of you to look it out:)

the z4mr rack is more than quick enough, you really don't NEED the mc rack, they all have different ratios and tbh none of them was ever proposed to be better or worse than another. This is probably one of those changes that you won't really notice however... big however... if i was changing id go for the MC rack for one big reason.... its cheaper.

Morning :)

That's actually my only reason
Not being cheap with car as I don't scrimp with my cars,
But with £1300 difference in price I simply can't justify it

But Bmw and myself need to know if fit haha
Apparently a gent selling from US a BM specialist says it's a straight swap

I just need it clarified :)

Good morning

That I do know for definite
As subframes etc all the same part numbers
Just wondering as are Bmw if need to program part in or anything?

Ps thank you all kindly for help!

I'll put pics up once home tonight etc

Warranty job buddy:)
Plus as at main dealer Bmw take them back and destroy them so not resold /refurbed as new Bmw parts
Makes sense

The part about BMW destroying them is completely untrue. They gut the internals and assemble with new internals in the old housing. When you get your new rack whatever it maybe ask to look at the packaging, it will state RMFD without question.

If this is further information you've been given by North Oxford BMW, I'd be worried.

Nope that was from sytner group that info
But I do remember something about them keeping casings

Kind of lost interest after prices haha

the mounting points of both the cars are identical.... they may have differing parts for some items , ratios and rates wise but the actual physcial mountings of the Mr /Mc are identical, if it fits the R it will fit the C and vice versa.

Hey again buddy

That's cool I'll give them a call Monday
As seem knowledgable
Only question outstanding would be would it need any programming into ecu?

Regards
Marc
I'll put pics up soon

For the record; I have driven a Z4M R and Z4M C back to back and the difference in the steering rack/ratio is very well noticeable...

In a good way?

As never driven a coupe
Driven new m235i and loved it's quick steering
