Z4M Servicing

Depends on when it was registered but definitely two with the third very soon or already late, depending on the date.

It's got the running in service, then 2 others but the owner says it'll be due soon. What will the next service be?

It should have had Oil then Inspection 1 then Oil again due now, but it may have been messed up as the time and mileage related thing is complicated. If you really want to be certain you'll need to know what it's already had and at what miles.

As wonder mike says it must have some form of servicing at a minimum of every two years. The type of service depends on what the indicator says which is broadly based on usage. I would guess:

Running in service before 1200 miles
In 2008 an oil service and a brake fluid change
In 2010 an interim oil service and brake fluid change (think you should also have had the air compressor tyre inflator thingy overhauled at this point)
In 2012 probably an Inspection 1 and brake fluid change.

My guess is an Inspection 1 if he's been doing bate minimum interim oil services. About £500-£700 from a main dealer.

That's not too far out.

Registered sept 06
Running in service 1266 miles October 06
Next service (don't know which) June 09
Next march 11

About right? Seems a big gap between first 2 services?

It's supposed to be no more than 2 years between services.

If it had the running in service in October 2006 then it was due one:
  • October 2008
  • October 2010
  • October 2012

Of course. Mind got befuddled thinking it should have had three services in six years and wrote the word three instead of two. I'll edit my post so no one gets bad advice!

It amazes me how people buy these cars and then don't service them according to schedule, especially when being closer to new.

That June 09 service is about 9 months late. I'd be wanting to see proof of brake fluid changes and use their inevitable lack of having happened, the big gap to the first oil service and the likely inspection 1 you're going to have to fork out for as serious bargaining chips. That coupled with your other thread about the need for tyres and brake discs sound serious alarm bells for me. Seems like the current owner is getting shot with big bills coming up.

The brake fluid is less of a concern, the oil is more important. Any warranty on the car would potentially by void now regarding the engine as the period has exceeded 2 years.

I agree that he's getting rid before the big bills but its a very low mileage car for a good price. The brake fluid changes have been carried out, it's the gap between the 1 and 2 services that concerns me. Should it concern me? Isn't the running in service the important one?

Well the running in service is indeed the most important I would say. It's missed one service because of time rather than over use. It would bother me but many would argue modern synthetic oils will have been fine for 2 years and nine months, especially if not used much. I'm stupidly anal so get the oil and filter changed every 12 months regardless. Not saying you should be as cautious as me, but you're going to need to spend £1k-£1.5k on it pretty quickly so use that to get more off the good price you've already been quoted.

How much is it up for?

I rejected a ///M AUC car because it had not been serviced for 2 years and 8 months. As said a warranty will be worthless with engines issues and when you come to sell it may concern others like it does you.

It's personal preference though, BMW put my rejected car back up for sale again as they were happy with it claiming the previous owner had changed the oil himself.

Mine is serviced fine except one brake fluid is 3 years for some reason, but oil all within mileage or 2 years.

What amazes me even more than people not getting these cars serviced is how people are more concerned that a 2 yearly oil or brake fluid change is 9 months late than the car has done so few miles.

What is important is how have the miles clocked up. Has it done regular short trips and parked outside in cold damp conditions or is it a weekend toy used for hi days and holidays living in a nice warm garage?

The service record doesn't tell you this.

The amount of oil Alpinas drink, I'd not be worried as long as its full. I've put 8 litres in over 15 months and 13000 miles.

Inspection II due soon
