Z4M service history

A colleague is interested in a Z4M roadster and he's found a lovely car. Ruby black with cream extended leather etc being sold at a reputable indy.

As I have an M3 he was asking about the service history and straight away I noticed an issue with the running in service.

Here's the history -

RIS - 2534 miles
Brake fluid - 3587
Oil service - 3862
Coolant and brake fluid - 6667
Insp 1 and brake - 15073
Oil service - 23697

It's priced at top dollar - £17500 so do you think the late RIS is an issue and it should be priced lower? Currently it's at circa 28K.

That's a very late RIS. I'd definitely use it as a bargaining tool, but will allow the more knowledgeable members to suggest reasoning behind this being a potential negative.

Don't see anything massively wrong with that. Its a little later than expected but nothing massively out of spec and don't expect it will have done any lasting damage. In fact i expect any damage would have shown itself by now given its on 23k miles so would put money on it being fine :)

RIS should be carried out at 1200 miles not 2500 miles, BMW state that for a reason and it is to replace the running in oils in the engine, gearbox and diff. You're correct Simon if anything was likely to go wrong it should have done so by now. The RIS was always something members on here said you should look for being carried out at the correct mileage and something i took on board when i was looking. I walked from a lovely ///M with the RIS carried out at aprox 5.5k miles, later found out from the dealer i called when investigating the history that this car had to have the gearbox replaced :idunno: Who knows if this was due the late RIS?

Rare and expensive option Extended Leather, something i'd love to have :)

I cant believe the asking prices of some of these ///M cars lately :o

I think it'd be fine, given it's 8 years old now. Only thing I'd add is that if the engine were to go bang, you're pretty much on your own....can't see warranty company or BMW goodwill covering any part...even though it has low mileage.

^^^^ Now 5.5K miles is excessive. I know RIS is there to replace the oil as they put a different grade in to get the engine nicely run in and smooth. It needs changing to remove the fine metal particles that are collected in this part of the engine lifecycle. However i would be very surprised if the 1200 figure isn't erring on the side of caution and 2500 is probably still well within spec, or at least VERY close to it.

It's likely that it hasn't harmed the engine, but you need to convince any future potential buyer of that when it's time to sell. Fine if it's a longterm keeper, not so good if you hope to sell it for a good price in the future.

+1

Sound advice here, it could be a deal breaker if you plan to sell on in the future, if i was spending that sort of cash on a low miles M i would want everything to be spot on, They set the RIS at 1200 miles for a reason!

This question comes up a lot on m3 cutters, as being the same engine in the E46 M3 which is a more common car, there are more incidents of the running service being done late. In my time there I can't ever remember hearing of one case of engine failure due to a late running in service.

Now I'm not saying it's not needed, but running 1300 miles over wouldn't bother me. The only problem you could have is when you come to sell it, some buyers will being scared the engine is going to go pop due the internet doom mongers

Every part of a car is built with a factor of safety to it. So though the book says 1200 miles, you can bet there is a good factor of safety built into that..... how many extra miles though, only the designers of the engine will really be able to tell you.

Assume it's this one:

It was brought up in the Market Watch thread, the ruby black sent folk drooling. To be honest I dunno if I could settle for a late RIS, I don't pretend to know anything about the side effects of having it late... but it would always be in the back of my mind if I heard a knock or felt something slightly off.

Looks like a beaut, love the interior. Paint work could do with a bit of going over though, looks a bit swirly/marred in places, nothing a machine polish wouldn't sort I imagine. Wouldn't be too worried about the RIS, could be used as a bargaining chip although I suspect the dealer will argue it's no big deal.

Thanks for the input.

He's tried to get a straight answer from BMW regarding warranty today and the seller noticed the car has actually been sold through AUC to the last buyer so it can't be that significant.

He's hoping to pick it up next weekend so for his sakes I hope it turns out to be a good one.
