Z4M S54 and S65

The S54 is a fine engine but does anyone know whether BMW thought of putting the S65 4 litre V8 as in the E92 M3 into a Z4M?

I would say that's unlikely, as IIRC it wasn't planned to put the S54 in there to start with.

Hence the late showing and need for a custom gearbox, ECU etc.

Didn't somebody put a V10 in a Z4M?

edit, yes, they did;

There's a guy on here who has put the V10 in

Must be fun, but for me the S65 V8 would be the better choice. Lighter, shorter and more powerful than the S54. The V10 weighs quite a bit.
I have given it some thought, and spoken to my shop about it who say it is entirely possible. If I was to do it though I'd be butchering a Z4 3.0 rather than an M.

i think I'm biased but i prefer the s54 over both the s65 and s85.... id rather F.I and keep the straight 6 config.

Have you heard that v8 at 8.5k though?! It's quite something. I am a massive fan of the S54, but to have that s65 in something lighter than the e9xm3 appeals massively! Unfortunately a weismann is definitely out of my reach :(
The s65 responds well also to FI if that's what you're after, I believe 600BHP is fairly easily obtainable. An NA 420BHP would do me just fine though I think!

just never been a v8 fan, ever... however I've really fell for the new mustang 350R ... now THATS an engine, handbuilt, flat plane crank, truly special... the N/A S derivative engines are all fantastic however, no denying.

the s65 really does respond well too boost, the harrop kit being my fave, very serious stuff.

I love the S54 in the Z4M too, it's probably the main reason I bought the car.

I did drive an E92 with the S65 engine. Tbh stock I found it sounded disappointing, even at 8k. It was just too muted and soft overall. No doubt with an exhaust it would sound lovely.

I much preferred the S62 from the E39 M5. A beautiful sound from the conventional crank V8 and stacks of grunt. Having said that, my other car has an M156 engine, which is surely one of the all time greats.

Everyone has to have a V10 or V12 at some stage. I would have bought an M6, if it wasn't for the awful gearbox. A friend has a supercharged E60 M5, now on it's 2nd engine. A fantastic engine, but that gearbox drives us both up the wall. If we had got the US manual versions, I would try one for a bit.

My perfect Z4M would be an alloy block, direct injection version of the S54, with 360bhp, 10% better fuel economy and 50kg less on the nose.

I think the S65 is one of the best engines ever made by BMW. I would LOVE one in my Z4M. That said my perfect Z4M would be something along the lines of that build by a forum member ("Z4M CSL" or something?). Leave it N/A but go with more aggressive mapping, cams, intake etc. 380-390hp out of a 3.2!

I had the S62 in my 1999 M5. Such an unbelievable engine. Although I think it would not fit easily, the sound is just perfect. V8`s are a god gift.

If you put a M V8 in a Z, you get the famous Z8. I think that BMW did not want to approach that so soon
