Z4M had her first trackday yesterday!

Went down to Cadwell Park with the Z4MR yesterday, brilliant dry day and the old beember did good :)

Luckily I've done Cadwell before and in a lot worse conditions so settled into it quite well. Did first couple of runs with the DSC on but found it far too nannying on track even pre-emptive at times which was odd when your trying to power out of a corner. With the traction off the car really came alive. Cadwell is a nice smooth track so it was very light on the tyres even though almost every high speed corner involves a bit of drift on the exit. It is quite heavy on the brakes but I think its actually done the car some good as I've had the brakes wilting a bit on the road - probably dust build up in the discs when they arent used hard (had this before on my old car) I was able to lap for a good 15 minutes without any sign of fade.

Other than sticking a tyre on the grass at complex I had an otherwise uneventful day. Not so for a couple of the drivers there. I've never been to a trackday with so many stoppages! They say Cadwell is like a mini nurburgring well it was yesterday with the track being closed about 5 or 6 times for the recovery truck to go out. Old 3 series went on a big grasstracking mission, peeling two tyres off the rims and breaking the steering (not trailering either - ouch) couple of breakdowns and a pug had a meeting with the armco (new bonnet/wings/bumper needed) Bump of the day went to an S2000 that was right up the banking at the bottom of Mansfield as I came round. This chap was very lucky as I saw him driving in the paddock later so the car must have been reletively ok. On first sight I thought a ride home with the AA would have been on the cards!

Will post some pics later on :)

i did my first one 2 weeks ago and it was utterly awesome the //m kicked some serious ass! right now the real reason i posted,

pics or stfu!!!

I actually fancy another in the wet, could be slightly more fun .... or maybe i just need to do a drift day :driving:

The organiser I used (track action online) are doing a drift day at Oulton Park in May which I'm going to. They have a specially made low friction surface which I'm assure wont wear anything off your tyres. We shall see!

Anyway on with the pics:

Quick 306 Rallye. Very impressed with this. Minimal mods (springs/dampers/stripped/panel filter/zaust) Needed half the main straight to get past.

Was it caged up too, as I know a lot of TDOs only allow slicks on caged cars due to the increased [measured by the TDO] risk of rolling/crashing.

Yeah the 26R was running slicks from a clio cup racecar. It comes with a cage as a factory option (with R888's) Owner had opted for slicks as he only got 1700 mile sfrom a set of 888's!!

If that 1700 miles was all track, then it's about 3 times what I normally get from road-legal stickies - he must have been taking it easy (or I'm over-driving mine) :P

Hmmm, while I understand they are excellent cars, I just don't understand the appeal of the Megane 26R, as it doesn't have the practicality of a normal hatch. What's the point of it? (As it's not exactly light, either)

Brilliant photos though, and looks like a fun day out!

Its incredible on track. It's basically a lotus Exige but slightly more practical. I would have had one myself but I'm through with FWD cars now lol. It's quite light to be fair at 1200kgs (Standard R26 is about 130 kgs more). It was lapping about the same pace as me so considering its 50% of the purchase price and a lot cheaper than the Exige/atom etc that way they start making a bit of sense. Make no mistake its a very serious bit of kit. The only thing I just couldnt live ith is the lack of seatbelts. I think owners put a brave face on it but it must be a total pain in the arse (and balls!)

1700 miles included I think 2 trackdays and the rest on road!

Next day out is a Drift day at Oulton if anyone fancies it? I'm assured its a low friction surface that doesnt wear out tyres.

They use the rally sections near the entrance for Group B displays when the touring cars are there.

It's good fun, although I've not done it in the Z4 yet, so may need to get some practice in that too!

When is it - purely out of interest you understand :P

That date is fortunate - it's one of my weekends that I'm not marshalling. However, there is a race event on at Oulton on the same day, so I wonder if we get to watch the racing (for free) when we're not sideways.

Any idea which clubs I should join (preferably free) to get some discounts for them then - or do they do discounts for marshals :P

I've passed the link for this site to them so hopefully it will get posted. I think the drift track is in the middle of the circuit so you should be able to see the racing.

It's just over Warwick Bridge as you come through the entrance and it's on the right, next to the entrance booths.

You won't see much of the track itself from there, but the 'rally' course has a raised platform from where you can sit to watch other people having their fun.

Here's a PDF of the circuit - just look in the top-left quadrant and you'll see 'Activity Centre' - that where it is, but it doesn't show the amount of greenery around there.

Tasters are a brilliant idea. I think people can be intimidated or put off trackdays as there tends to be a bit of mistique around them. Should be a great way of getting used to how the days are run. For the most part they are pretty laid back and lots of fun.
