Z4M Coupe - Servicing when and who?

Hi, I have had my car now for over a year and its awesome, mainly used as a weekend toy :-)

The car has just hit 40,000 miles and the service indicator is still telling me I still have 6,000 miles till next service! This seems extremely long without a service, I am used to much more frequent servicing. My question is will this number rapidly drop to maintain a service every 2 years or does driving style and usage dictate when the next service is due?

Also if I stick with the service indicator will this be an inspection II or I.

Full BMW Service History:
• Pre-delivery Check - Sandal Motors (Bayern) 08/09/2006
• Running-in Check - Sandal Motors (Bayern) 30/10/2006 @ 1236 Miles
• Oil Service No1 - Cooper (Sunderland)) 20/06/08 @ 13229 Miles
• Inspection No1 - John Clark (Aberdeen) 30/06/10 @ 23097 Miles
• Brake Fluid Change - John Clark (Aberdeen) 30/06/10
• Oil Service - John Clark (Aberdeen) 09/08/11 @ 34575 Miles

I have a very good friend who is an excellent mechanic with his own garage. He is completely trustworthy and will actually do all the serviceable items and allot more! I don't trust main stealer's from all the stories I have heard first hand (esp Merc's). The only concern I have is around the service history. I can buy and supply all the products for the service and he will stamp the service book, however how badly do you think this will affect my resale value? I intend to keep the car for a little while more!

I would value your opinions on the above questions as a forum serial lurker

Schedule is based on miles/use and/or time.

If you do low mileages then you'll hit the 2 year limit before you get the service warning on the dash. However the only service you need every 2 years is an oil service, and DO NOT reset the service indicator.

The Inspections still need to be carried out at the prescribed time as displayed on the service indicator (or within about 1200 miles over it) if you're maintaining your warranty (manuf., AUC or Mondial). If you've got no warranty then it doesn't really matter where you take it, but potential buyers may want to see a dealer or well-known specialist stamp in there rather than some generalist independent.

Full service history is more important than no/part service history, and I can't see a full history with dealer/specialist servicing reducing the value of the car any more than not having sat-nav - but you'll probably save much more by taking it to specialists/indies for the inspections. Just make sure they've got the correct gear to do the inspections, and enough insurance to cover them dropping a shim down the cylinder and rebuilding/replacing the engine if they didn't check.

Hi Smeg , even with low miles being covered i would always have the oil & filter changed every 12months or 8k but not have the service indicator reset .
As yours has full dealer stamps & relatively low miles i would advise maintaining at least the basic BMW stamp in its history as & when asked for but have any other work done by your friend
ultimately though if you stray from the correct schedule with the M it could affect resale price ?

Thanks for the feedback. When the service indicator reaches 0 will I need an Inspection II ?
Anyone have a service schedule handy :-)

From your car's history, it looks like the nest one is an Inspection 2 (i.e. the big £1200rrp one) - although it's available for about £700 if you search around or use main dealer discount) and are flexible with location/dates.

Mine didn't include a courtesy car, but some do. I simply hired a car for 24 hours for £20.

Ignoring any interim/time-based oil services, the service schedule looks something like this (numbers are thousands of miles, and are about the maximum you'd ever see, most people see 12-13k miles between services and I've put that in brackets)...
  • 00 PDI
    01 Running In Service
    15(12) Oil Service
    30(24) Inspection 1
    45(36) Oil Service
    60(48) Inspection 2
    75(60) goto 15
