Z4 Z4 TRIVIA FROM AUSTRALIA - THE PRICE YOU PAY

Hi all.
I'm from Australia. Lately I've been checking out the prices of Z4 in the U.K and the U.S.A. How lucky indeed you are.Prices for BMW in Australia are crazy. I often look at threads and the dealers are referred to as stealers. If you think you badly done by - how do you think we feel. I've listed prices and conversion $ rate for the car I bought recently - a 2006 bmw z4 2.5si manual. Plus a few others. i Hope all who read find the price structure and CONVERSION to U.K. pound / U.S.A. dollars interesting.

Hi Bill, interesting post! I don't know how much the weak pound has to do with this, but when I last went to Oz you'd get about 2.5 AUD to the pound and now it's 1.63, which is about the lowest I've ever known it (not that I check very often). So that certainly accounts for the fairly inflated GBP prices.

Tough call though, would you rather cheaper cars or better weather?! It's almost summer here, and it was -4C the other night!

Cost of living is certainly lower, but aren't salaries generally lower as well?

I'm fairly sure wages are higher compared to here, mainly due to exchange rate. I was there for a while in 2008 and earn't $25 (around £15) an hour as an unskilled labourer! I am not 100% sure but I think that would be a lot compared to labourers in the UK!

Also the alcohol was a lot more expensive unless you were brave enough to drink the goon!

I'll address a few issues. A normal factory worker earns about $35,000 per annum or 21,000 pound per annum. If buy chance you rent an average house its around $300 or 180 pound per week. Bread 2.70 or 1.8 pound, Milk per 2 litre $2.50 or about 1.6 pound
etc etc
STEALER OR DEALER A while back I had the 3litre Z3. It developed an intake and exhaust cam sensor fault. I was quoted at the dealers for the pair $700. I also asked the dealer the price for set of 6 spark plugs. Thats another $240
I got on ebay and bought the 2 cam sensors in the USA for $240.00 plus the plugs for $60 plus $45.00 freight. A bargain.

Another example. Last year I purchased a 2002 Porsche Boxster 2.7. good car with great handling. After a few good work-outs the clutch started to slip. So i contacted 3 Porsche dealers within a 250klm radius for a supply and fit price. Quotes were $2000 - $3000 and $5000 ------ so I sold the car! Let some-one else fix it. No more Porsches and back to a BMW

I really love cars and yes the beaches are fine - weather can also be cold as well. I also like watching Top/5th gear. Great shows and the best I've seen for years.

Import tax to pay if you're keeping the car in Australia permanently, or so I believe?

Here's a crazy situation. I've booked my VW T5 van in for a camper conversion and when I last visited the company's workshop - just a small place in North Berwick (east of Edinburgh) - they had an Australian-registered VW van awaiting conversion. The owner, living in Australia, had arranged for the van to be shipped to Scotland, converted into a campervan, then shipped back. It worked out cheaper for the owner to do this than pay for a similar conversion in Australia, despite the shipping costs. Crazy...
