Z4 Vanos problem 10 mins after sale!!

Hi,

I just purchased an e86 z4 coupe at the weekend.
Literally ten mins after driving it from the dealers the car stopped in the road and the engine would not restart.

Long story short, I called out the RAC and they did a diagnostic on the car. I will attach images of the fault codes.

I was hoping for some advice on this kind of problem, the car wasn't cheap and I don't want on going problems. Generally the car is in amazing condition with the original tool set and everything.
It's stunning to look at, but I know the Vanos system is a complex and critical part of the engine.

What would you guys do, ask for a refund, or make sure it's repaired correctly?
I am entitled to a full refund as it was brought from a dealer. It is at a garage currently being repaired under warranty.

If your cars have had similar issues I would be interested to hear your experiences / opinions.

2a43 - valvetronic; termical overload protection (intermittent)

2a41 - valvetronic; electrical overload protection
(Intermittent)

2a39 - valvetronic, adjustment range (permanent)

Not sure if it's a nail with so many codes!

Hell, don't mess about, phone the dealer up 1st thing Monday and be polite about them collect the car and repairing it. Once repaired, ensure that they understand you are taking it for a test drive, 50 miles of hard driving should do it. You are protected under the consumers rights
 
Yeah, there is 30 days by law to return the car.
I'll give it a good test after it has been repaired and see how it goes.

The dealer is aware of the issue as he came straight out to me when I rang him. He booked the car in at a BMW specialist and assured me they would be using genuine BMW parts to make the repair.

I have a diagnostic reader myself so I will be doing a full check on the car when I collect it.

Haha I had a great time in it for 10 mins!

Love the car, just can't wait to be back in it.
I'll post some pics on here once I have it back. :)
 
Sounds like it will all get sorted for you. Looking forward to seeing some pics once you have it back and are enjoying it again :driving:
 
the vanos & valvetronic are two different systems, the vanos controls the valve timing and the valvetronic governs the valve lift, hopefully it's just an actuating motor change and not to involved-enjoy your car once it's fixed!

That's not vanos..

It sounds like the valvetronic motor has seized or burnt out...
Not uncommon and not a bad repair... It looks a lot like a wiper motor but is positioned under the cam cover and operates all the valvetronic lifter arms.. The arms also wear, so make sure they are replaced when the motor is replaced.

Ah ok, well that's good news.

The guy from the RAC said it looked like something was trying to draw too much current, so maybe that's about right. He said a couple of sensors may also need replacing like the cam sensor etc.

Not an expert when it comes to engines, but trying to learn a bit more about them!

It's a montego blue coupe with grey leather and mv2 alloys. Really beautiful car!

Even when it was broken down, I was like: "she looks amazing though! "
