I keep giggling at the thought, swmbo isn't too happy, someone please post a picture, photoshop or anything, it will definitely be photo of the year!!!
I really hate myself for asking this, but does anyone know if you can get a detachable tow bar fitted, and if so would the fixing bracket be visible when the towbar bit was removed? The reason I ask is I have tow bar bike rack and would be far easier than wrestling the bike in and out of the boot. Slight thread creep but towbar related!!
the towbar is available from witter in germany. stupidly expensive. £600 or something. It is not homologated (european regulation approval) but if you fit it yourself you are very unlikely to be prosecuted, unless it fails because you chumped up the installation. You won't be able to have it fitted professionally. People drill holes in their vehicles to fit stuff all the time. (A lot of land rover defenders have somebody take a toolbox to them immediately after delivery). It is up to you.
I would expect a bike rack to be unproblematic. Trailers and caravans would be more complicated legally as the car does not have an 'official' draw weight and weight limit. I think you could argue a like for like comparison with a similar weight vehicle, eg a polo or something - which is only good for 400kgs so basically useless for anything except a small ally box on mini wheels. A braked trailer weighing less than a ton should also be safe.
