Z4 - spikes or just M+S tyres?

For those climates where yuo get ice on the roads, is the Z4 better on spikes or M+S will do? Anyone uses spiked winter tyres here after finding M+S unacceptable? It's got a light arse this car, so I wonder what kind of winter tyres would it need better? 50% city, 50% outside with ice very clear possibility on highway during Jan-Feb period.

I hate spiked or studded tyres (high consumption, noise) but I was told that on Z4 it may be the only option if winters are serious. Your thoughts on this?
 
I drive my Z4 year around except for the very worst of winter weather and then I stay the hell home. I do run winter tire but not those with the spikes. The past few years I have been running Bridgestone Blizzak and had had no issues getting around on snow and or ice. Deep snow is another problem and spikes won't help there.
