Z4 screen replacement - a few quick bits of help

Hi Everyone

Well I've just had an eventful 24 hours!

I decided I wanted to swap the LCD part of the nav system by opening up the screen module and pulling it out and swapping a new one in.

Thanks to sk93 on here I managed to get a second hand one to try too.

So, pulled it apart, put the new screen in, plugged it in quickly to test (just the screen, didn't bother with the motor etc) and bingo, worked fine.

Next, thought I'd do a 'cold' test so bunged the screen in the fridge in a box for a few hours and then went back outside with it and NOTHING. NADA.

So the next few hours see me pulling everything apart many times, removing the DVD unit, battery off, fuses, collecting a spare LCD PCB from SK93 (thank you!) and still nothing NADA. Removed my parrot Bluetooth etc etc, nothing still. FFS.

Not a good nights sleep.

Did some reading and found that the DVD unit can sometimes fall back into 'mono' mode rather than colour, as the same drive supports the in-dash basic radio nav with the arrow style nav. Modded a firmware to get it to force the colour display back in (if this was the problem) and NOTHING!

So, in a slight moment of contemplation I decided to plug the motor and switches back into the screen just in case it was moaning about not having them plugged in.

BINGO. Then it hit me - when you press the button to hide the screen it switches the screen off first then folds away. So all the time I had been testing the screen without the motor plugged in the car thought it was shut!

So, have just assembled the screen back together again fully now and I'm pretty sure it will work fine when I go and plug it back in. How annoying.

I'll run with sk93's screen for this week and see how I get on, if it's still weak/dim then i'll get a brand new one.

Hope my pain may help someone else at some point!!

Cheers

Will.

Yep, all assembled and ok now.

One other thing I should have mentioned too - the screen PCB that sk93 gave me has slight differences to the one that is in my car.

A few less big capacitors etc but importantly, the small white plug/socket combo for the motor is different - ie the actual socket type is different so if you ever want to swap out a PCB, either make sure you get the motor (or loom) or check you are getting the same PCB!
