Z4 Roof Repair Recent November 2010

Hi to all

I have just spent the weekend, removing my roof and repairing my Roof Motor (see post Roof Motor UK for any of those looking to buy parts from the UK, Soper (Lincoln) and / or Motormec)). It all went really well, thanks to Shipkillers in depth and great notes (www.shipkiller.com) :-)!! It has been said a lot before but thanks for those.

However I have a few issues. The reason I decided to do the repair, is that the roof started to play up. When the open button was pressed, the motor ran, roof unlocked but you could hear it whining and not moving. Eventually, after about 30-40 seconds the roof decides to move, and goes all the way down, with a stop start motion. The same occurs for the up motion.

I thought the motor was on its way out and suspected a loss in Hydraulic Fluid within the system. After removing the motor from the housing, my suspicions were correct, it was soaked in Hydraulic fluid, rather than water as with most.

When I loosened the banjo bolts on the original motor, fluid just spurted out due to a massive pressure build up, which I kind of suspected. I attached the new motor and put it all back together. Operating the roof again, it makes exactly the same whining noise as before and length of time to open. The motor is definitely working and I thought the new motor would have enough 'new' fluid within it to refill the system on the roof so it would work properly.

Do I have to take the roof off again and fill top up the motor with fluid? Can I move the top manually up and down and few times to fill the system with fluid? Anything to do with the Bowden Cable? Any other ideas?

If anyone can help (really hoping Shipkiller reads this) would be really appreciated

I thought, as an added help, that if anyone is looking to repair their roof motor, I have done it very recently so am more than happy to help if Shipkillers detailed notes do not assist.

sounds like fluid is too low, there is not enough supplied in the new pump to fill the hoses and cylinders if they have previously leaked.

Thanks. Would it be more advisable to use the electric up and down or move the hood manually while off the car to get the fluid back in the lines again?

I did it electrically just moving a few inches either way, But I was purging the new pump only , not the lines. I think you will have to power it to get the fluid in, you may be just compressing the air if you do it manually,

Just thought I would try and finish the post off....it was the hydraulic fluid that was too low. She drank a lot. All fixed and up and running, just drove 2.5hours to London with top down, heated seats on and wooly hat. 7deg outside and dark....but GREAT

Just one final thing, the roof sits about 1cm away from the back and jot flush as it was, does anyone know the solution? Could it be due to the tension cables in the roof being loosened during the repair?

 well done glad its up and running again......
The gap might possibly be able to be adjusted by loosening the 4 torx bolts at the front and moving it slightly, but I am not sure.. I think this is the only thing that is likely to affect it.
