WANTED Z4 purchase advice

Wanted
Hi All

First time purchaser here, I already posted in the newbies thread and had a useful, generic response there. I have had a look through some options on Autotrader and wanted see what people thought. I am after a weekend run about, pretty flexible in what I am after, just don’t want to end up with a bad one! Below are a few options, any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Sorry for all the links, quite easy to go down a rabbit hole and turn yourself in knots when looking at these!

Much appreciated
Rob

So there's no focus to your search save the fact they are all E89s..

I guess you need to answer the following questions

Whats your capital budget

How long do you plan to keep it

How many miles do you think you'll do

What type of usage

What type of driver

Can you cope with unexpected (large) bills

If you answer those you can get a better answer...IMHO

Thanks for coming back. I admit it is a bit of an unfocused search, and that is reflective of my little knowledge.

To add a bit more colour: is is about 16k; haven’t given thought to the length of time I’ll keep it (I have had my x1 for 10 years); mileage will be minimal as is will just be a weekend drive about and I am not a fast/aggressive driver; bills won’t be a problem.

Well £16k is a very healthy budget for a second generation E89…

So your options are

Buy a late post 2015 fully loaded 20i/28i low mileage …it needs to be post 2015 to avoid the potential cam chain problem..a 28i or a 20i with a remap allied to the ZF8HP auto box is a splendid thing…some people argue no 6 pot sound ..that’s the only negative for some imho

Or buy a late 23i/30i in good condition with goodies with lots of change left ..very reliable..no real changes happened to e89s over time

The auto box is good ..not as good as the ZF8HP but for £400 can be updated to behave like a ZF8HP

I’d avoid the 35i /35is as it’s a rocket ship and unreliable compared to the others..

Other opinions are available

23i is a very reliable engine N52 - I will have one of these for sale shortly deep sea blue with cream interior 32k miles auto gear box. want about 10k for it beautiful car...
20i is abit gutless and dont hold value
35i they are rockets but expensive to run, fuel usage is high. I have a 35is and it does 23 mpg on a good day.
E89's if you have a roof issue they are a pain to fix my 35is has a roof microswitch issue and its hard to get to and expensive if you go to bmw to get it done.
