Z4 puddle lights

Did you treat the drilled hole with any sort of rust inhibitor or will the silicon be enough protection?

The door handle is a 100% plastic moulding, so I merely used araldite to bond it in.

Bottom of the door for the puddle lights uses the existed blanking plate so at no point is paint/metal touched.

I like the idea of puddle lights, and well done OP for installing - that's way above my ability level I'm guessing.

I wonder if they do a batman-signal version.... ;)

I thought about the retrofit but don't like it.
My plan is LED strip under the door for puddle lighting, possibly with a bit of red facing the rear for traffic.
I also want to colour match the interior door pull and some strip light for the door cubbys. Nothing chavvy, matching the colour and brightness of the rest of the interior.
I'm thinking if I can manage that then some RGB in the footwells could also double as white when the doors open.

Got myself some 5mm leds and hoping to fit these on the external door handle like cj10jeeper. Hoping to do it over the weekend. Worried about footwell panels to feed the cable. Wish me luck :?

I fitted puddle lights to my e46 m3. I would never do it again. You have to cut handle and absolute Arse ache

The footwell panels are easy as they are a just unscrew. Torx iirc
Take your time working from one end to the other, whichever you prefer. Personally I'd do it in stages, so get the dimming power from a foorwell light first, with a loom to the door hinge, then once you know that works by testing on one of your new LED's take the door card and membrane off and start to create you own door loom. adding in footwell, and door LEDS as you desire.

Just remember the airbag needs battery disconnecting if you remove it and don't turn on the ignition at any point it's disconnected.

Good luck :)

Thanks man! Much appreciated! one question though, do you really need to take the airbag off to insert the led on the external door handle? Was kinda hoping to avoid the airbag and work around it.

HI guys..Hmm mixed reactions! Well I was expecting that...

For the record I followed a link on the forum to install puddle lights and sourced these from ebay (where else) for £20. Took the feed from footwell lights chasing wires through door jam trunking.

The units themselves consist of a small tube 4cm X 2cm, a Biright SMD light one end, a couple of lenses and a BMW logo filter. Quite well made, a bit like a Maglite? I sited them just inside the bottom of the door card approx half way along.

Any way great Forum enjoy...

Mike :D

Really like that, great job. Could you post a link to the ones you bought on eBay?

So I did a mod this weekend after viewing a few threads and figuring out how to do it. I've avoided doing a modification on my external door handle. However, I installed BMW welcome projector lights.

Love it!

Any chance you could post the link of the ones you bought and a close up of where you fixed the lights?

Glad you like them!

Yeah I've posted the close up shot in http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=82733&p=1223704#p1223704

I got them from eBay. Item number 271616042276

I confess that I was more interested in the advertised clip that came up on the same page: "22 year old girl buys Lamborghini". Very nice. The car was OK as well!

Lol! Mikes mate fitted these to his 3 series when he picked it up last year.....he had forgotten all about them until the darker nights started to set in and he realised everytime he got out the car he was lighting up the floor with a BMW logo.

It makes him happy but he fitted it so the BMW bit is at the top when you open the door so if you look down from the seat it's like a big badge sat next to you. Shame he wasn't too fussy about the squint ///M badge on the back of his 320d :wkr:

Lol. Yeah I get what you mean. I sort of did it in the same way as my mates m3.
