Z4 Power Socket Relocation Kit

I was wondering if anyone would know if you lose the other cigarette lighter or with this one you can use 2. Also, they claim it is an easy installation but has anyone installed this and was it as easy as they claim.

Don't know about that product but I have just done something similar... Purchased one of these and run the cable through into the glove box behind all the panels :)

I have also just run the power cables back through into the ash tray compartment making for a very cable free installation. Shouldve taken some pictures really... still can of the finished install if required?
 
They don't specify installation procedure but I would suggest it's simply a case of removing the ashtray which is secured with a single screw and then using a pair of scotchlok type connectors to break into the existing wiring below the ashtray. The replacement panel panel is just a clip in part.

I'd expect a less than 10 minute total fit time and very easy.
 
LeatherZ generally makes good products and has a good reputation as well. They have a few representatives floating around on BMW forums.
 
It seems like a great product but why pay $48 for a new panel?
Why not go to Radio s**t and by a new cigarette outlet and drill a hole in your access panel.

I am still not sure if you can have two 12V outlets. I have a Nav that runs off it and occasionally my iPOD/cell phone. So to have 2 would be great plus this way I can actually close my ashtray which is my pet peeve to have it open. I would be concerned on the additional power load and if I would need to replace the fuse with a higher rated one.
I do not mind spending $48 to ensure it is cleanly done. Plastic pieces like that can crack fairly easily. I do like the cap though for the outlet from RS.

Taking 2 zero's suggestion of the RS outlet I see no reason why you could anything from 2 to 4 of those outlets into that panel and have a really neat installation. All you need to do is know their depth and check for any obstruction behind. Link their cables together in parallel and drop down a single lead to the original loom. The panel is tough and you only have to drill x holes in it.

For the likes of Ipod, phones, etc the current is negligble compared to that of the OEM lighter. Certainly DO NOT fit a larger fuse as that is the circuit protector and you risk melting the harness.

If I needed more outlets that would be the route for me and save the $48 - no question
 
This is a relocation kit. It does not add a second power socket. I put the kit together specifically for people who bought my gauge kit and wanted to keep a power socket nearby. Installation is plug and play, you remove the ashtray and unplug the socket that is in the ashtray. You remove the trim panel and install the new one with the relocated power socket. Plug in the new socket to the same connector that the one in the ashtray uses/used.

If you are looking to add a second socket, you need to piggyback off the existing wiring. I have not done this but doubt it would be very difficult. I am not sure if the car could handle the load so you would need to research that.
 
Thanks for all the input. I think I will pay RS a visit this weekend and tackle the project. If all goes well I will post a how to with pics in case anyone else wants to add an additional power outlet.
I got spoiled with my ML which has 3 so to go to 1 really stinks.
