This is my first sports car and I'm used to diving modern 1.6ltr diesels. What should one expect a 2.2i ltr Z4 to be revving at at 80mph?

About 3,000rpm

My 3.0 (Auto) is around that level at 80mph.

A lot different to a diesel.

I came from a 320d to a 2.2 Z4 and felt like I was using too many revs all the time but you have to keep in mind that petrol engines rev 2/2.5k higher. You soon get used to it but it would have been better if bmw had used the 6 speed gearbox like they did in the 3.0 Z4.

Thanks for the advice.I've come from driving a Skoda Superb estate and T5 camper. My Z4 is 11 years old so I imagine things have progressed since it was new.

My 2.2 definitely could have done with a sixth gear, but got used to it. Probably around 3500 rpm at 80mph

I can't say for sure with the 2.2 but my Zed revs too high on the motorway even in 6th. Why BMW didn't make 6th a proper overdrive I just don't know - it would have been very useful for transiting across the country on a long motorway run to meet up for a hoon. I think I can understand why you're asking with 5 gears - revs are high.
