Z4 M - thinking of upgrading

Hello,

Currently have a E85 2.5 (2003) and thinking of upgrading to a Z4 M (2006-2008)
Wondering biggest pros and cons that you may have experienced.
Am aware of tax and insurance but wondering if M servicing and any potential repair costs are big turn off?
Any advice or experience is welcome.

Cheers

Dave

A cared for Z4M is as reliable as they come, for a 15 year old car. Major service cost are same intervals as a regular Z4 but around twice the money. Plus diff and gear box oil need changing every four years or so. Check Vanos checked and Shells have been replaced or budget 1k to have that done too. Fuel consumption is from 35MPG if you drive on a dual carriage way at 55mph. Which I do sometimes just enjoying the sun, down to around 8mpg on track. Typical Sunday running for me is around 21mpg.

So on to the good bit. Do it. The engine is still an absolute peach and the rest of the car just about managed to keep up with it. Which all in all means the Z4M is an absolute riot to drive. :driving: :D

If you haven't already then get out and test drive one.

You must be an old man Buzy - I have NEVER in my life seen 35mpg!!!

You should be aware that parts are significantly more expensive due to the standard M-tax, but a well looked after one should not need loads doing. Just be aware that things like brakes are pricey, and stuff like front arms or bushes are a chunk more than the non-M cars.

As advised above, personally I'd budget for £1200 for Rod bearings, £1100 for vanos and timing chain from Mr Vanos. other than that as buzy said - get one and enjoy it :)

When it comes to M cars if you can afford to buy 2 of them cash in hand (no finance) then you can afford 1. If you can't then best to leave it and go for the model below. The running costs are pretty much double the standard car. The service costs is a staggering difference and I have no idea why. it's the same fluids and filters i would have thought. just that other parts like plugs need changing more often, etc driving it up a bit.

Depends on the miles you do, a lot of miles mean a lot of expensive services as the big ones are mileage based. I had mine for 7 years and cost me next to nothing

Do it, the engine is worth the price of admission alone. I would argue the Roadster so you get the full aural experience with the roof down.

Costs wise, as the others have mentioned it's more, but you only live once and cars like this are not made anymore, let alone in the future.

Thanks, appreciate the detail. Am off to test drive one tomorrow

Be sure to find time to warm it through, then give it the full beans. 4.5k to 7.5k revs is where you learn it's worth double a standard z4 and some. :D
