Z4 M Roadster ILB

Hello everyone,

I picked up a Z4 M Roadster on Friday in my favourite colour for these (Interlagos Blue, although Monaco Blue would have worked but seems to be a rare colour) and with a pretty decent spec and full service history [edit, I previously said good history noting I didn't have any receipts prior to the previous owner. Having now been through all the paperwork in the Owners folder, the documents in there are more comprehensive than I thought on the look through when I bought the car.. so I am even more happy with the purchase than I was even before :D ].

I previously owned an e46 M3 with the S54 and love that engine. I swapped the e46 for an e90 M3 to get four doors so I can use it for the odd occasions when I need to take the kids in my car. However, now being at a point where we can afford another 'fun' car I was keen to get a convertible sports car. It started with the idea of an Elise, but then I thought it would be better to have something my wife would also want to drive. This led to the Z4 M and thinking about the 987 Boxster S. Having always had BMWs the idea of the Porsche was appealing to try something else, but the draw of the S54 was too much, and when this one came up, in ILB, in budget, good history check, and a decent spec I decided to go for it.

Even owning and loving the S65 V8 M3, the S54 is a special engine, and with the roof down it is joyous. Feeling very fortunate to know both of these engines will be in my life from now on.

Spec wise it is:
ILB over Black with black carbon leather
ISOFIX (to be honest this was a key reason to act given we have two young kids, and, understandably, this doesn't seem to be a common option)
PDC (although needs fixing)
Cruise control
Hi-Fi loudspeaker system Professional (but without the Nav screen)
Seat heating
Storage pack (in the brochure this is listed as an option "Storage Package incl. cup holders". I have cupholders but there is no entry on the build sheet (via VIN search) that notes this as an item)
Exterior mirror package (folding mirrors)
Wind deflector (I'm surprised this was an option, but the brochure says so)

The PO recently put on Bilstein B16 kit with Millway top mounts.

Couple of bits and pieces to do, PDC fix as noted above, I've ordered an F10 M5 gearknob, and will get a refurbed steering wheel from Royal Steering Wheels. Then once it is signed off by PMW in Chelmsford I'll start saving some pennies for an Eventuri intake and Eisenmann backbox. Also think a detail and paint correction with a treatment for the roof.

I look forward to being part of the community on here.
Cheers,
Rob

Anyway, a couple of pics, because what is an owner's thread without pics!

Hi and welcome to the forum. That's a lovely pair of Ms you have there.

First very minor change to the car. I know lots of people like black kidney grilles, and the tricolour slats on the ones the PO fitted looked kind of okay, but I like the OE silver surround kidney grilles, just looks 'right' in my eyes. So I ordered a set from BMW's ebay shop and they arrived yesterday. N.B. I know the nearside headlight is a bit dull, I will address the lights in due course.

Couple of other bits and pieces done:

I fitted the F10 M5 gearknob. Might need to get it out and trim the edges a bit to get it to sit a bit better, but looks and feels nicer than the original one.

When I bought the car, the third brake light was cracked (I believe that is common...), so I bought a new OE one from BMW's ebay store and fitted it.

Reading through the forum, I understand people feel strongly about the 'whippy' aerial.... So it seems I need to get back on ebay and buy a shorter one. Does anyone have any views on the "BMW Genuine Sports Rod Short Phone+Radio Aerial/Antenna 83mm"... Does that fit in as a straight plug and play swap?
Thanks,
Rob

Aerials are a divisive subject on here!

But your existing one should just unscrew from the base but you might want to check it will before you order a replacement.

I bought this one as it's neither a whippy nor a stubby:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075P2TS4Q/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_item

But if you really want a stubby there is a 64mm Peugeot/Citroen one that fits straight on and only costs 5 or 6 quid online.

Just be prepared to get some grief!
