Z4 Gas Conversion

Why would it not be a good thing? Other than space and weight there is no other real side affects except for the healthier bank balance.

If your doing a lot of miles then it seems a logical step.

Whilst I can see the advantages of installing LPG on a big petrol engined barge, I don't think it lends itself to the Z4. Even the 3.0i is fairly economical for what it is.

Even at that, it just feels the wrong car for a conversion.

Depends how many miles you do! One thing people always point to is the extra weight on a sports car - in reality the whole kit weighs less than a full tank of petrol.

LPG has been good to me and my bank! I get 160 miles for around £21 :driving:

It basically all comes down to some simple math. Cost of install vs expected saving and whether you will make the install cost back over the life/ownership of the car and then some. You have to expect to be in the plus and not just break even otherwise it is a pointless exercise.

Certainly puts things like E9X M3's in reach though for people not able to stomach the fuel costs.

You are right, I don't do anything like the mileage to justify the cost of conversion and I can't remember ever seeing a LPG point in any of the local garages I use. There must be some as the one on Ebay is in the same town as me.

160 Miles to £30 isnt that good and is definatly not worth the outlay, i get around 150 miles to £30 the majority of the time in my standard 3.0i

I dont see the point personally

But he said £21 which is almost a third cheaper, plus it entirely depends on your mileage. Just because its not right for you doesn't mean it isn't for someone else.

Valid point but for me I'd have to be really clocking up the miles to make it worthwhile, at least 30k a year and at that mileage I'd rather be in something a lot more comfortable than a 2 seater sports car on lowered suspension!

Even then you're relying on nothing going wrong (appreciate that the kits are a a lot more reliable than they used to be) plus resale value. I know I wouldn't touch a Z4 that had been LPG'd, like Neil said it's just the wrong car. If it works for you though then it's all good. :)

Hi
I had a X5 4.4 V8 on LPG and I wouldn't have it again. It's a pain looking for stations that sell LPG also you have to have the LPG system service with a certificate.

I service mine myself with a filter (£5), not sure where you would put a certificate :poke:

Just filled up today, £21.72 for 174 miles = 12.5 pence per mile vs 20ppm on petrol.

14,000 miles break even based on £1,050 outlay. I have done 42,000 miles in just under 3 years, I am £2,100 better off thanks to my conversion (after paying back the £1,050).

For me, I was spending so much on fuel that I considered selling and LPG was a better alternative.

My next car will be a 650i convertible and will be getting converted immediately

Each to their own but if you do serious milage and are keeping your car, you would have to consider it!

(LPG is available at a LOT of stations, you just don't notice until you look for it - the easiest way is on the price board you see something for sale that starts with a 6!)

On the ebay ad it says £30 :) which is what we are discussing isn't it?

Before anything else I would be missing the petrol smell too much to consider it...
And who would seriously buy a Z4 having in mind fuel saving? :fuelfire:

Anyhow, out of curiosity, what about the performance after conversion?

My heart bought my Z4, not my head! It was a combination of the 2 that caused me to convert it to LPG and not sell it for something powered by devil juice.

Performance has no noticeable difference.

If you need to sniff petrol, it still has a petrol tank :poke: . The engine needs to be slightly warm before it switches to LPG
