Just having a quick break and it occurred to me what the main differences between this Z4 forum and the Smart Roadster forum I used to frequent are, and the reason why I changed from my Smart.
The Roadster forum has a 'what I did to my car' section as well, but it mainly concerns itself with repairing things that have stopped working, or repairs of some sort. The main forum threads tend to be 'my car conked out again' and 'I love these cars, but struggle with keeping it going', and roof problems, various sensor issues like the cycle valve, there are many, many water leak topics, warning lights, the gearbox 'three lines of doom', and just lots of basic reliability issues.
The Z4 forum is mainly posts about mods, meets, cleaning, selling or buying help, tyres, and aerials. There is a vague smattering of 'my roof doesn't work', but nothing to make you think that my car might not make the next journey - which is what I used to think in the Roadster, that this is the journey that will end up on the back of a low loader!
I couldn't have a car like that, so I looked around at more reliable sports cars. The Boxter was too complicated or tricky to work on, the MX5 to 'hair care by Kevin', the MG too unreliable as well. So Z4 it was, albeit with skyrocketing costs as the Roadster was only £110 a year tax and 50+ mpg, (assuming the SAM (ECU) unit didn't go at £600 plus, clutch was OK, and it didn't conk out) but I think it is worth it for the reliability and that straight 6!
Anyway, work beckons again...
