Z4 electric roof problems

I have a 2004 model Z4 which I have owned for about 5 years. The electric roof has worked flawlessly for that period. I have now relocated from the UK to Menorca for sunnier times and typically the roof is now playing up!
I have read all the posts relating to Z4 roof issues but I cannot find one that reflects my particular symptoms, which are as follows:
I can try the electric roof one day and everything is normal. The motor runs, sounds healthy and the roof will open and close perfectly! The next day, when I press the roof down button, nothing happens. I do not get any lights on the cockpit button. If I get lights, it works, if I get no lights on the button, it doesn't. From this I think I can assume that the motor is OK as well as the cockpit switch. I have checked the motor connections behind the drivers sear (RH drive) and the connector is on and the compartment is dry. I can also assume the fuses are OK. I was wondering whether the micro switch could be the issue? Also, what tells the roof that the car is moving and therefore stops the roof cycling? Could this be a factor and if I did try and activate the roof while driving too fast, would the red light come on? The switch in the boot is correct as the roof is lowered and the emergency opening device is fully to the left. Any help would be appreciated, as there there is no main dealer on the island!
Thanks in advance.
