Z4 E85 SMG issue

Hi guys hope someone knows these gearboxes on here. Got my car out and can't get gears properly. Yellow cog light is on the dash and have to over ride it to get a gear and then it has issues when I put it in reverse as it wants to go forward from cold. If I let it warm up I can get it to select the correct gear but will only go to third which to me appears to be like a safe mode? Got underneath it yesterday after charging it up and when you turn the ignition on you can hear the pump straight away as usual but then when I start it up in neutral it makes a clunking noise around the gearbox almost as if it's trying to select a gear?? Anyone have any ideas???

Need to put a code reader on it to see what codes have been set in the transmission module.
Since you have the Cog warning light lit it will have set code(s), until you know what these are pointing to its just guesswork.

Code P1851 covers a few faults on the 6speed SMG. The gear symbol is the general fault message from the SMG and can have many different causes but typically 1. hydraulic pressure in the accumulator is too low 2. clutch cannot be actuated i.e faulty actuator 3. switching / selection angle sensors provide implausible values i.e faulty
What condition is the battery in ?
Have a look on The SMG Society website for information, trouble-shooting and help. They offer many new and reconditioned parts  .https://www.smgsociety.com/

Cheers guys, this is starting to sound expensive 😭
Not necessarily. Thankfully the gearbox itself is pretty bombproof and it's rarely the electronics that give issues but usually one of the hydraulic components, sensors or selector. Have a look at prices on The SMG Society website for their new, used and exchange recon parts. Not what I would call extortionate. I've had a few dealings with them over the last 8 years of SMG ownership and always received excellent and rapid customer service
You just need to pinpoint the offending component

Hi sorry for the delay. i have put a reader on and cleared most fault codes but am left with 4EF5. Is this the sensors right on the top of the gearbox?
Many thanks

Hi Eclipto. 4EF5 is a Selection Angle Sensor fault code and yes they are situated right on top of the gearbox, 23427507168 (07) & 23427507169 (06). Unfortunately, you'll probably need to lower the box to get enough access to replace one or both them :(

I thought that's what it meant but wanted someone to confirm it with me. may as well do a clutch at the same time then as access looks to tight to get at with the box in 😭.
Many thanks for getting back to me 😊

You will possibly need to run SMG adaptation on INPA but I'm not 100% certain. Email the question to SMG Society, always very helpful  https://www.smgsociety.com/contact/
