Z4 E85 2007 2.0 catalyst

Help folks. I bought a 2.0 E85 two months ago, a 2007 reg with 82k miles on the clock. I thought I'd bought it from a trader since he advertises as such. Turns out that's not the case. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I'm a bit picky and didn't like the fact the engine warning light was on. I took it to a local German car specialist and they diagnosed a faulty valvetronic motor. Duly replaced, the light came on again 10 miles down the road after collecting the vehicle. Back to the specialist ! This time they put it on the ramp. Have you guessed yet ? No catalyst....a bodge job with a now straight through exhaust. Very strange, considering I'd bought it from a 'dealer' and the MOT was only 2 months old.
Having exhausted all the options to reject the vehicle, including dealer who turned out not to be (therefore trading standards not interested), police regarded it as a civil matter, Ebay said you didn't use Paypal so we can't get involved, etc etc, I would now like to ask you vastly more experienced folks in the way of the Z4:-
1. How many catalysts has the E85 2.0 got ?
2. Can they be found, I'm told they don't make them anymore ?
3. Are there any alternatives I can look at ?
Note it is a road car, so all solutions have to be able to pass an MOT. Over to you my new and helpful friends :)

I’ve got the n46 2.0l engine in my e91 and the cat is part of the manifold, there are 2 in fact as in the diagram, new manfolds are expensive but they are available, try ebay.Don’t know why diagram 1 doesn’t show the cats.
You may want to move this tread to general discussion it might get more views.

OP, this may sound daft, but given the difficulty of finding these parts I suggest you keep your eyes open for a cheap (breaker) 2.0 Z4.
Even if you cannot break it yourself, let someone like me, [ref]bigwinn[/ref], [ref]street[/ref], or [ref]umfaan[/ref] know and we may be able to work a deal with you.

The last 2.0 I broke for parts had 3 cats. 2 smaller ones on the manifolds and one whopper on the start of the exhaust.
Do you know whats missing OP?

Thanks Zed. Not a bad idea. Sadly I sold my partner's old one, same spec, last year for £500. Doh :( Thanks also Street, I think all of them are missing. Looks like the seller did a thorough job. Is there any alternative option, or maybe I could just get away with replacing the 'whopper' or the smaller ones not all x3 ?

Very bizarre that someone would remove all cats ..specially seeing as this wouldve cost to do..
I can understand if it were a track vehicle..
But I doubt it is.
But it got through an MOT? .
They only check emissions ..I'd be surprised if a non cat car would pass that..
So I'd be asking questions how did this get through MOT..
Perhaps you should also approach that center..
I keep my my MOTs and keep the emissions data.
I wonder if there is a record of these tests.?

Hi All. Thanks for your help on this one. You have indeed correctly identified that mine has two small (size of a tin can !) catalysts on the manifolds BUT the larger one on the underside has been removed. This one is very difficult to source although I suspect having looked at it with the guy who repairs my car it would be possible to fit one of the many non make specific aftermarket options. Having said that, out of curiosity he put it through the emissions test and it passed.....just. So there you go, and thanks again to you all. Ben
