Z4 Coupe - Do I really need a new rear light unit?

I have been advised to replace the rear light unit at a cost of approximately £300 because of this MOT advisory:
"Offside Rear All position lamps light intensity obviously reduced (4.2.3 (a) (i))"
Am I being taken advantage of because of my lack of knowledge?
Any help would be much appreciated.

A photo of the lamp might be a good idea. It might only need a buff up.

Does it have a tint on it?
If all lights are dim could possibly be an earth issue.
