Z4 Coupe deposit down; any key queries to ask?

Hi All,

So I am new to the forum and the Z4 Coupe si; I have owned 10+ BMW's prior but never a Z4!
I am smitten with this Z4 coupe 3.0si sport Auto in Saphire Black / Red interior & deposit down.

Its an early 2006 one with only 2 owners and 66k miles & seemingly immaculate.
As its a distance sale is there an key questions I should be asking regards usual degradation signs?

How far away from you is the dealer - the further they are the harder it will be to fix any 'little thing' you may find.

Just make sure you take it for a decent drive when you first get it, and check that EVERYTHING works. Don't forget that you can reject it if it's not as described.

Check that the tyres match across the axles, and are of a decent make, as you don't want to be paying out for 4 new tyres if those Rapid P600s or Delintes are fitted all round.

Also, in some of the photos the rear arches look miles away from the tyres. Have they got the correct staggered size on the rears, or have they fitted a square setup?

Yes, the rears do look a little small?
Possibly the correct wheel but a smaller tyre? Looks a bit stretched?

Does look mint..wouldn't say the rear tyres looked stretched to me, mv2's do comfortably take a 20mm spacer on the rear of the e85 chassis to get them looking less lost in arches, possibly the same on the e86?

Dealer nearly 3 hours drive away. Test driven one locally but this seems a better unfettered car which I am after.
As near factory standard as possible is the ideal.
Shall give it a good run when received. Dealer is super helpful and has a good warranty.

It has Hi-Fi option and the build sheet mentions "Cd Changer I-bus Preparation" & "Prep. For. Mob. Ph. Bluet. Interf."

Being the Business CD unit without the professional nav in the dash (which I prefer) will the car actually have blutooth and a CD change or just be proepped for future addition?

Cannot advice on the vehicle, although we do have a Z4, but as its done less than 100 miles since we bought last october we are not best placed to advise, YET :driving:
However, we can comment on priddys motor company as we have very recently purchased an F31 335d from them, prior to purchase we did our homework and received positive feedback from people we know that had dealt with them in the past, and we also found them very helpful and professional, especially during these difficult times with lockdown etc. and always happy to answer further questions etc. by phone or email, would buy from them again.

Have to say though that the car you have secured looks stunning, saw it on their site a few weeks back and they do seem to be able to secure some very nice vehicles indeed, take a look through the sold list, especially the Z4 section.

Hi there mate - looks in great nick (visually). i=If I were you, I'd get a C110 code reader (£35) and plug it in and read codes (if any). This will let you know if there is anything below the surface that needs a look.

Beyond that, there are a few threads on common issues that will need sorting if they haven't been done already. Others will chime in, but stuff that needs changing on all Z4's are:

- The water pump
- The rear springs

Beyond that, it looks like it has had an "Inspection II' (i.e. full service including spark plugs) so you are good there.

Above all, enjoy it as much as you can!

Thanks; yes dealership excellent comms and the car looks v well looked after. Excellent reviews also.
Love the Z3M coupe but just can't warrant it for the current usage requirements!

Thanks for the info on the reader and I will check on the pump history. Yep Inspection II just carried out.
Looking forward to getting this on the drive!

Looks like a very smart Coupe OP.

Coupes have been known to suffer from rusty tailgates, so when it's open check around the edges. And if you can check the rear brakes pipes for corrosion under the passenger side just in front of the rear wheel. There is a plastic cover that ends there and road debris can get lodged in the end of the cover which will absorb moisture.

If it's had a new water pump that's a bonus, but not necessarily an issue. The pump on my first E86 died at 60K miles, but my 2nd seemed to be on the original when I sold it on 90K. It's only a concern because if it dies the car will generally overheat in less than a mile, and new Pierburg (OE) pumps cost around £250 - just don't go to BMW because they charge twice that for the same part!

Those CD-changer and Bluetooth Prep features basically just mean it's pre-wired for both - I think that's because they were both dealer fit options.

Anyway I hope it all works out so you can enjoy Coupe ownership with the brilliant N52 engine.

Looks like a lower profile than normal on a standard 18” wheel. From the back it looks like a square set up (225), although hard to tell.

I'm not sure - to me it doesn't look much different to my 1st Coupe on OE staggered wheels with 255/35 rear tyres.

Just had a look at mine now it’s got 18s back on, you’re right. Nothing to worry about then.

I think the suspension looks fine and the same as mine. If it has been jacked up they can sometime sit a little higher on one side. Should drop back down once you take handbrake off and get in it. The MV2 wheels do sit inside the wheel arch where they are meant to be to stop the road muck destroying your paint. Spacers might affect handling without adjusting suspension geometry to accomodate? I'd rather the car handle as it was designed to... that said I might try some 19" CSLs in the future.

Check the gap along the front bumper as looks a touch wider on the right side. It might just be the light/angle of photo or may well have just been off and refit on the boink but could be a replacement/damage repair from a front end bump. Get under the front and check all the ABS plastic that connects to the wheel arch liners as this is very brittle so shows signs of damage. All the clips for the lower grille easily pop out too with a bump so make sure it's sat in their tight. The 2nd photo shows a car I went to see before finding mine that had obviously had front end issues.

Another common issue is ABS pump module failure. Mine had this despite having only done 25k miles. Apparently happens if the ABS has not been activated often enough. The dash warning lights on mine were intermittent and not showing on test drive. It was only the honesty of the seller that warned me about it and a few months after buying it they popped up.
