From my experience silver top have the metal rocker cover and external CCV, the black top have plastic rocker with internal CCV.... However it is just a cover so you would need to look beneath it to confirm.
I assumed it to be age related but my 2008 coupe has the silver top and metal rocker cover as does a 2006 roadster I've worked on, but have seen multiple ads on autotrader that show cars from all years having a mix of engine cover and not dependant on year.
I stand to be corrected on this so anyone in the know please do so... but I think the black engine cover and therefore black plastic rocker cover beneath have had the head modification done by BMW to solve the ticking HVA issue when the oil drains from the head and they get noisy!? The newer style plastic rocker cover which incorporates the CCV was fitted after having the HVA fix done and a new black engine cover fitted
