Z4 Chrome Side Motifs for Engine Size

Hi Everyone

I have just purchased last week a lovely March 2005 Z4 with the 6 cylinder 2.2i motor. I am confused because, although the car is in lovely condition and has a complete Main Dealer service history, there are no chrome 2.2i side motifs on the back of the front wings.

I have checked on various car sites and, although I have found a few others without the 2.2i engine motifs, most of the 2004/2005 2.2i Z4's seem to have them.

Can someone please explain this apparent discrepancy. I hope it doesn't mean that my car has been in a serious accident and had 2 new front wings!! Early replies would be much appreciated so I can sleep at night!!

I don't know how they are fitted but somebody may well have just de-badged the car???

Hi I have 2.2 and was specced with model delegation delete from the factory- i.e. no side badges. Most on here have removed them if they had them regardless of model due to it looking cleaner. Relax and post pics of your lovely z! Welcome along!

Good opportunity to replace them with some ///M badges. :D

Seriously though, don't do this.

Nothing to worry about - lots of owners 'de-badge' their cars for a cleaner look. Welcome to the forum :)

Thanks guys for the welcome. Debadging is probably the answer so now I can sleep! Will post a pic when I have sorted how to do that. Its Sterling Grey and follows a Seal Grey Boxster S and before that a Montreal Blue 2.8 Z3 but I prefer the shape of the Z4 over both already.

Mine is de-badged also. Just as a matter of interest, anyone know if you can buy either the rear or side 'chrome' badges? I've looked on e-bay motors/amazon with no luck. Cheers.

I struggled to find a rear side badge for my 3.0si - in the end I bought one form a forum member who was breaking his car.

Hello and welcome! As others have said, it's either that a previous owner has de-badged, or had a model designation delete (I have this on mine, it was a factory option) - do you have the 'Z4' badge on the bootlid as well? I have no badges other than the BMW roundels on mine. You may be able to check the options your car was specced with using the VIN number - a dealer can do this, alternatively there is a website somewhere that will give you this info but I can't remember what it is.

Just checked and, like you Dev, the car is also debadged at the rear with only the BMW emblem - no Z4. Thanks again to all those who have commented so far for your warm welcome. Appreciated.

Most BMW cars come with the option of no badges. As can be guessed mostly smaller engine sizes or lower spec opt for no badges showing engine size whereas the bigger engines like to flaunt it, but not exclusively of course.

Most owners with 3.0's leave them on or it wasn't specified to de-badge and many with 2.0 through 2.5 specified de-badge. or removed them later. (note I say 'many' before someone with a 2.5 shows a picture of their badge).

Easy to figure why :)

Indeed. I initially thought it strange that mine was specified with the badge delete, even though it was the largest engine they did at the time (being an '03) - but then with the colour, the wheels and the clear light pack (which was retrofitted by a dealer rather than by the factory) they were quite particular about how they wanted the car to look. It's actually a pretty common/basic spec inside (no sat-nav or uprated stereo, m seats weren't an option at the time), just the subtle details on the outside that made a difference when the model was brand new.

Think it is more down to personal taste- if I had an //M i would still lose them on the sides as they look like an after thought. IMHO :D

I have also de-badged mine on the side as I think it looks better, it's just personal taste and mine is a 3.0si :D

The fella next to you at the lights has to know there's no competition - badges deter the boy racers
