Z4 beaten by rivals in aggregated ratings

Hi guys,

I just launched a site that has an independent rating system based on aggregated expert reviews. The score for each new car is based on the average scores given to it by magazines and journalists in their reviews. This independent grade, called the buzzScore, shows how highly regarded, or not, each new car is.

The new Z4 gets a decent buzzScore of 7.5, which shows it's clearly regarded by the experts as a good car. However, the main rivals to it, such as the 370Z, TT, SLK and MX-5 do get considerably better ratings.

Our page for the BMW Z4 - http://www.carbuzz.co.uk/BMW-Z4

I'd be interested to see if you guys agree with what the experts have said. And if you were to rate your E89, what score would you give it? If you like you can review your car on the site, we'll soon show the average user review compared to the avg. expert review.

Cheers, James

Anything anyone owns is personal to them in some way. It also depends on what you want it for. I also think that the previous harder edged Z4 has set a level of expectation that the new z4 should be the same or harder edged still. It isn't, it's been taken an entirely different path. Less hard core, more elegant and easier to live with but still fun. As a one car person, its the ideal fit for me.

In my own experience, having driven the Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and also the Nissan 370z while looking at this segment, I plumped for the Z4 35i. Personally its the best looking car to me, by far has the best interior. The ride is compliant, just as the Porsche was.. the 370z was very uncomfortable and noisy. Z4 and Porsche are both good all rounders.

If you're looking for a pure sports car to take to the track, Porsche or 370z, if you need an all rounder, Z4 or Porsche again (370z suspension is not good for other than track in my opinion). My point being, it's all subjective as to expectations and needs/desire. Most of the reviews on the site seem to come from a pure sports car perspective, and of course, undeniably there are better options out there than the Z4. However, as a good mix, sports come commuter/every day car, both the Z4 and Porsche came top of my list. The reason I went Z4 was simply that porsche interiors never did anything for me, a little bit 80's Vauxhall IMHO.

Don't regret the decision for a moment. Much rather have this fabulous car than the Porsche or the 370z, TT etc.. tested them all.

Here's to summer and flipping the lid!

I actually agree on the description on your rating to be honest.

It was a close call between my E89 and the 370Z. I almost ordered a 370Z!

I bought the E89 because it just felt more special, more upmarket in build quality, especially the interior and also to drive, but I still think the 370Z is a better sports car!

Difference between the 2 on purchasing? If I met up with mates at McDonalds or Max Power events and I did track days (which I don't), I'd get the 370Z. If I met my mates at a private leisure club or F1/Breakfast Club type events and dined out at fine restaurants (which I do!), I'd get the Z4!

I still wonder "What if" now and then mind!

I actually found the 370Z's suspension a bit more stable through the bends and not too crashy on bumps ether.

Did someone mention the Focus RS? I do think I have an "inner chav"! :P

Breaker, the Focus RS is a great car, the reviews for it are quite incredible. Embrace your inner chav!

Interesting what you guys said about comparing the Z4 to the rivals. Anyone bought a 35is, because they really haven't got a good write up?

Those reviews just underline the compromised nature of the new zed, it just can't compete on objective sports car terms with its rivals...even if bmw think its a cruiser everyone else still thinks it should be a sports car. Where's the ZM when its needed?!

I always used to have Fords. Never had any problem with them. Had a few of the RS ones also. It was tempting!

I've never bought a car based on reviews in the press. I just use mags and TV shows to highlight potential purchases, but then make my own mind up to whether I like them or not.

Kryton on here bought a 35is and he's selling his before a year of ownership is over! :?

On the 35is, I personally think they spoilt the look of the rear with that M Sport bumper. Not keen on the wheels either to be honest. And there is no manual gearbox!

Err, only because I'm getting the new 991 S, and my Z will be 2 years and 2 month's old when I sell it :poke: :)

The iS is a very good car, better still with the DCT :driving: which is why I've ordered the PDK 7 speed box on the 911

And hey Jez and co said it's onehellofa car! Remember? So who do we listen to?

Listen to no-one... make your own mind up. After testing the 370z, 2xporsches etc... z4 was the one I wanted. People will always have perspectives. I mean rolling pins can't make coffee... doesn't make it a bad rolling pin. People will always compare brand for brand.. but this Z4 isn't intended for that, its a car in its own right, compromised someone said, yeah, absolutely, and good... cos I don't want rock hard suspension on the way to work like my e85 had, and i don't want to have to buy two cars, one to commute one for a blast at the weekend. I want a 'compromised' car that can do a little of everything.

Nick, that's the problem. So many opinions it's hard to get a clear picture. That's what we're trying to help with!

Maniac, that's what car reviews will never be able to judge properly. What you yourself want is what counts. All they can do is inform you of the areas the car is strong/weak in, and let help you make a decision yourself.

Did you consider the Mercedes SLK. I'd say that was a similar, dual role car. Will be interesting to see what reviews the new one gets.

For me the Z4 was an easy choice and it wasn't really performance that tipped the balance. My nearest porsche dealership is nearly 40 miles away so boxster went out the window. Don't like mercedes styling, never had good experiences with audis and the 3.0 a5 sline i drove was so light on the steering i hated it. I'd had two 3 series convertibles and both were fabulous, not liking the new shape 3 series i ended up with the Z4 and i love it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and i think whatever reviews say, if you love something about the look of a car you'll go for it.

Before the e89 i wouldn't have bought a Z4. I know not everyone will agree and many don't like the new lines but i chose the car for its' looks, the performance was a bonus. If you weigh it up; how many people have a car out there that is the quickest on the road?
If you want to be the fastest on the road then i think you need at least 3 x the money of a new Z4 and still someone will come along in a mod'd car and give you a run for the money. (and i won't profess to be the best driver out there, reactions etc all count)
Key always is what makes you happy for the budget you have. I will always think, rightly or wrongly, that a Porsche will top a BMW any day. If i had the money i'd be joing some of the forum guys who have ordered their porsches. Good on you guys, i'm sure you'll be in hog heaven :-)

I'll just keep on truckin along in my little old hairdressers zed :-)

Totally agree with most of the comments above- the ideal car is all dependant on your ideal needs – i.e. its all Horses for courses really isn’t it! :cpilot:

B4 I made my purchase; I wanted a quick, comfortable 2 seat coupe or roadster that would be great fun that I could use every day.

I certainly didn’t want the car to make me feel it was always on the edge and requiring constant attention as this could become tiresome, for example I wanted to be able to drive the machine a thousand miles and get out fresh & relaxed, not tired or frazzled. :dizzy:

So I decided to go for a sports cruiser/ sports coupe- rather than an all out sports car and wanted something classy & refined. I also wanted reliability built in as standard and was not prepared to deal with any issues like standing on the side of the road waiting for the AA, (or whatever recovery company floats yer boat) so this pretty much excluded all classic cars, Astons and TVR’s for a start.

Merc: Don’t like SLK & have experience of the SL and like them, however very early on I decided I may consider one when I am 80, but certainly not for now that’s for sure!

Aston: (I am not a banker) :chairfight: After being advised by a relative (due to bad reliability experience) to not go for either an Aston or a Maserati, I tested the DB9 (6.0L V12) and the Vantage V8 (4.3L V8) and they were very, very nice; If I were buying on looks alone the decision would have been made already at this stage, but during test drive it was raining heavily and electrics on car started playing up so this put me right off. I loved the look and feel & interior of the Astons; however the reality of living with one day to day after spending 50K on a second hand high mileage model did not fill me with desire. Add to this; the well known reliability issues; the massive expense of insuring one; the silly servicing / running costs....all just meant they didn’t give me what I was really looking for so they were not for me.

Porsche: even though I have never personally been a fan of the Porsche cars, I tested the Boxster /Boxster S / Cayman / Cayman S in various flavours incl 2.5, 3.2 man & 3.2 Tiptronic S and 3.4 and never really got out of one with a big a smile-I did love the flat six though  . Don’t get me wrong, the Porsche’s are great cars; just not for me or my taste and more full blown sports, not a GT or cruiser. Again the servicing costs are very high and I felt you had to be constantly on full alert, not able to relax at any stage which isn’t what I wanted.

Nissan: I tried the 370Z (V6) very fast and sounded gr8, just did not have the class or the pizzazz I was looking for and I wasn’t into the very firm ride. If I had been considering a track day option, this would have been higher on the list; however I wanted a better build quality and something far more refined than this.

Jaguar: Tried the XK but felt this was too big really, it was quick too, build and interior were lovely but this car just did not get ma freak on in any way, would class this as an older man’s option, (think Tim, terribly nice but Dim here!) :| however if I wanted 4 seats it would have been much higher on the list. Nice Car, not for me or what I wanted.

BMW:I tested a range of Zeds in various engine sizes (all of which I loved at 2.5 and above) and then the Z4M which I really, really loved, but it just didn’t quite have the interior / design I was after for a car in this range / price bracket. I wanted the coupe but also wanted the roadster at the same time and just could not quite find the right finish / colour I wanted.

So I had a bit of a sitrep and waited a while, I decided that I needed something with a different and fresh look, I really didn’t want to be seeing the same car every time I go for a drive either. Ref the engine; I knew by this stage I wanted a flat six power plant (I had become rather prejudiced towards the Flat Six as I have a Honda Valkyrie F6C 1520cc Bike and wanted a car version with more power and a lot more safety than a bike, after the testing of various Zeds this was a decision clearly made.)

Eye of the beholder-Then I saw the new Z4 E89 and almost got a stiffy on the spot. Something about the way it looks, those lines, the shapes that change depending on the angle and height you are in reference to the Zed, the fact you get a coupe and a roadster all in one pretty near perfect package. I pretty much fell for it before I drove one and once I saw the Pure White Design / Anthracite package I booked a test drive immediately. I kept telling myself it was going to be no good as I didn’t want to get my hopes up, yet as soon as I pulled off I was right smack bang in the place I wanted to be. I would have pawned my own granny for this beauty & I knew it. :telloff:

This was the only car I have stayed awake about prior to even driving it, genuinely excited the day/night before I took it out and took it away from the garage the same afternoon; never looked back and it’s a keeper. Can’t imagine ever getting rid of it, very happy and ideal for “what I wanted and needed”

Nice post iwatchlive, really interesting to see how you perceive the different brands out there. Just shows how much of car buying is down to personal choices.

Love the colour of your Z4 in your sig.
