Z4 35is Upgraded Turbos?

Hold off on committing to any tuner for the project just yet. I'm in the final steps of a true fix for the N54 boost ceiling issue, I've got it running on a couple of cars already and it looks to be a success, it greatly improves the performance of the shifts vs the current solutions from MHD and any other tuner. Currently all DCT cars boosting above 18.5PSI utilise some sort of bodge either with a JB4 or by entering incorrect scaling values for the pressure sensor to trick the car into thinking it's producing less boost than it is which causes issues.

It involved a small rewrite of the program area of the ECU so it requires more caution when testing than normal remaps which only alter calibration. I've got another person testing it this weekend but I've been running my car at about 20PSI for the last couple of months and it's been solid.

Just to go to LSD’s for a moment, I’m curious to your previous comment on this thread that you don’t think one is needed for the road, my 365bhp 35i torque steers form the rear and the rear brakes grab on long bends especially in the wet. You know vastly more than I do on theses cars so I’d be interested in your opinion if you didn’t mind. I’ve got some KWV3’s en route as we speak, maybe they’ll be enough with the M3 front arms and H&R anti roll bar...?

Noted. :)

Need to buy a car first haha

I asked a couple of guys who use their Z4s for heavy track work what I should change and they both said unless you're going to take it on a track most suspension mods will just make it more uncomfortable.
The only real change I have that would alter the handling is the wheels and tyres. I wanted more grip and less unsprung weight so went with MPS4S tyres on BMW 437M wheels. The 275 rears made a huge improvement in grip over the stock 255 width. I think 18" wheels would be even better but I couldn't find a forged set of 18" wheels that would fit for reasonable money.

If your car is pulling to one side under power then I would assume there's a problem with the rear suspension. I'd figure that out before changing parts.
The ARB will just make the ride worse and the handling more skitty on poor surfaces, probably a good mod for track stuff but a mistake on a road car. I've made the mistake of "upgrading" suspension on cars before and always ended up with something more harsh.

I think the 35i comes pretty well set up from the factory provided you get rid of the runflats. I also own an E92 335i that comes with exactly the same transmission and engine as my Z4 and it doesn't get close to how the Z4 handles. The E92 is considered a decent handling car and the Z4 is often criticized but I think a lot of that is because people compare the 3 series to more normal cars where the Z4 gets compared to hugely more expensive sports cars.

Many thanks for the reply.

The springs and shocks are new and I’ve been under the car on a ramp with a tooth comb looking for worn or loose bushes, none found but that’s not to say some aren’t still worn so renewing them wouldn’t go amiss. The H&R anti roll bar is on the front I should have said. I guess we’ll see what happens with a Quaife diff and the KW’s which I’m going ahead with as it’s too wayward as is. I’m on M4 wheels too with new Eagle F1’s. Maybe it’s agree to disagree on this one...

What’s the weight of an M4 front / rear alloy vs a ‘normal’ cast alloy?

No idea...nor does it really matter on a road car, drive around with quarter of a tank of fuel and no passenger constantly if it matters that much...

The implication from R.E92 was that the reduced weight of the forged alloy had a material effect on the handling...

The 437M wheels are about 2kg lighter per corner than the standard 19". 8kg of unsprung weight is quite significant but that's not what's causing your handling issues. I was on some cheapo aftermarket cast wheels before which were even heavier than the stock wheels so the difference was huge.

If your car is pulling to one side when accelerating there's certainly an issue. There's no harm in changing the springs and ARB. I was going to suggest a broken spring could cause that kind of issue. It's quite easy to miss a broken spring, they can snap at the ends so look OK unless you get the car lifted up.

For reference I run a Quaife LSD, H&R ARBs on the second position in the rear, 18” Zito with Conti Sport Contact 5P 235/40 and 255/35 with Bilstein B8 dampers on OE MSport springs with E90 M3 steering arms 5mm +stock offsets and it handles extremely well..especially in the wet ..

I'm currently having tte 500 hybrids installed. I should have the car back mid/end of next week. I'll let you know the outcome 👍

I think it’s just the open diff tbh, springs and shocks are pretty new, it’s much worse in the wet but still squirms in the dry if you really nail it....hard not to do with the map installed.... It doesn’t pull to one side only, more of a torque steer squirm. In the wet it’s pretty nasty on long sweeping bends with the brakes grabbing so I do think it needs a Quaife LSD on it.

Your car looks ace mate! Any more details on spec? And more pics please! lol

Edit: Also are those 20 inch alloys?

No they're 19s bud. Spec as in regards to hybrids?
So far..... vsrf charge pipe, wagner evo 2 comp cooler, forge diverter valves, forge turbo blankets, afe sealed intake. Ar decat, Custom adapted e92 air scoops, Walboro 450 hpfp.
In the process of custom oil cooling..

Personally I wouldnt go over 500 horses with these cars unless you want to put it on a drag strip.
As regards to the chassis it needs stiffening up front and rear. On bends at 140 you can hear it flexing and it's loud. Almost sounds like the glass is cracking thats how I can describe it.

Sweet! Any pics under hood?
Alloys look really nice too

Very nice motor broomsticks, you wet sanded that? I did mine back in the summer but I doubt it looks as good as yours does...
