I know Bing will be treading the path very soon & look forward to his own feedback on this
I do 15k a year in my DD manual so my leisure miles i do prefer auto

The M only in manual guise was a deciding factor in my Zc purchase in auto form ( cheaper to tax & cheaper to purchase were the obvious sweeteners to less grunt under foot) ,
Just wondered how many have switched from the above & more importantly how did the transition go ?

Its the reason that I will be going for a 35i or 35is later this year, rather than an M.

Interesting view, I am the opposite. My X5 is automatic (obviously) but then my M is just the fun part, hence wanting the manual whilst doing the leisure.

Transition wise - My M is manual, my Golf is manual, my Polo is manual, my X5 is Automatic and the Abarth is SMG equivalent and they all have a place at times.

I am in the camp of maybe a daily is better as an Auto but a weekend car works better as a Manual, my 330i is Auto and my Z4M was obviously a manual but hand on my heart neither gearboxes are that great.

The twin clutch in the TT is pretty good though and my favourite manual for a BMW in my experience was my old 520d a sweet shift and very easy whereas both manuals in my Z4M/M3 were challenging shall we say.

As PVR says all set ups have a place its just some enjoy an Auto more than a Manual and vice versa...my next car will be a Manual that I do know for sure :driving:

Appreciate the above guys but no definitive answer to my question  so to be more specific  a few years back i had a 964 tip , absolutely loved the auto but at that time they were quite low down in the 911 hierarchy & in a moment of stupidity sold it to supposedly upgrade to a 996 with GT3 kit .
was a gorgeous colour & above all the seller had been fastidious about the car,s mechanical upkeep however it was manual & after 10 weeks it had to go , it just spoiled the whole experience hence my post question.
Ive had the 3.0 auto & couldn,t fault it for my needs but who has then gone onto the M ?
Is the M manual a good or bad box ? Is it a smooth clutch ? Are all the same ?

It is not the lightest of boxes. The Polo has a much nicer gear change than the M for example.

Having said that, the M box is not a bad box just not silky smooth. The clutch is fine though.

I second this, the M clutch is fine but the gear changes can be a little obtrusive though but you could also argue that it is part of the charm of the car maybe.
