Z4 2.5Si (N52) oil level - top up or not?

Just checked the oil (electronic indicator - no dipstick on N52 engine) after the recommended warm up period (10km), and it looks like it's showing "OK" but half full (or half empty if you're the pessimistic type).
The owner's manual pretty much says leave it until it tells you to add more (or I guess when you do your next oil change), but I would have thought half full would be due for a top up? If so, by how much approx?
Any thoughts - to top up or not to top up?

I would add half a litre, I think the dashboard light/buzzer sounding means a litre to be added.

its not half full... remember the engine hold 6.5 litres so it tells you to top up when it gets down to 5.5 litres, ball is in your court if you wish to chuck half a litre in but I wait and put the full litre in
 
Thanks for the replies. I've got about 700km of driving coming up in a couple of days and was wondering if a bit of a pre-emptive top up was in order?
Edit - will probably add about half a litre tomorrow (being careful not to overfill).
 
When we had our Zed and 328. We always told the shop to just put in 6 liters at the oil change and we simply waited till the oil fairy told us to add a full liter. Nothing worse than an opened oil bottle just waiting to make one heck of a mess.
 
It's fine at 0.5l 'down' as it's within tolerance. The issue comes when you forget about it nearer the bottom of the limit or you're on a big driving trip and didn't take oil with you.

If I spot mine on less than maximum I top it up.
 
From experimentation I believe that it goes down in 200 ml increments so that would be a 400 ml top up - but obviously there is a threshold as it's digital.

You can top up but you don't have to until the add 1L message comes up. Have you tried to ID the cause of consumption? Mine was eating about 200 ml every 1000 miles - new CCV has cured it. Manifold was very oily!

I don't think it's over-consuming oil, it's due for a 2 year change soon, and I suspect I slightly underfilled when I did the last change.
Having said that, once I do the oil change I'll keep a closer eye on the consumption to see if it's any cause for concern.
 
Any consumption is worth checking though if it appears normal then just monitor it to see how it progresses.

At least when you do a change you'll know exactly how much went in :thumbsup:
