Z4 '03 - ERROR P1515

Has anyone had a problem with their electrical system? I am getting a P1515 error code (Manufacturer specific code) and thus can not pass smog. Payed BMW to check up on the error code and they sad it is an instument cluster error code to replace the entinre insturment cluster. ($2300+ to get a new one and install). But i don't trust that this will fix the real cause of the code and thus would just be a waist of money (might be wrong).
Online i find that P1515 is "Electric Current Circuit Malfunction" which sounds to me to be something related to the current; i have been having some problems with my electrical system. Like the sound system turning of by it self while driving and back on; Or changing channels all by it self.

Any suggestions?
My next step is to try to pass smog with the code (most like not going to happen). Then take out the radio so i can inspect the guts (wires) for any damage that may cause a short or an increased drain in current. After that i am at lose. My last resort would be to try the 2300 BMW fix, but i am skeptical.

BMW z4 2003 - 3.0i - No eng mods.

Thx
Manuel

I really don't know, but I think "P1515 Electronic Throttle System Throttle Position" is probably a generic code and not a BMW specific code. The electronic Throttle position would more likely cause your CEL light to go on; more likely then a loose wire in the dash.

If you google BMW and Throttle Position Sensor, you get a fair amount of hits.

I am unfamiliar with this issue, but it maybe something you want to look into.

Like Daryl said, looks like a Throttlebody or Throttle position sensor problem. Id have a look at the connections to the throttlebody (follow the big pipe from the air filter box and you shall find!) You could just try taking the battery off the car for a while to reset the ECU and see if it happens persistently - i had similar problems with my old car (p1514 and p1515 errors) and it turned out to be a small vacuum leak in the inlet manifold.

I think the garage are telling you a load of rubbish, personally speaking :(

Good luck sorting it :)
