Your car opinion wanted -BMW M3 2002 NEW

I have been offered an all original paintwork BMW M3 in Imola Red 2002 Manual gearbox with CSL wheels and some carbon goodness.

The car is like new, always in a cocoon, and it has only covered 18K Miles.

What do you guys think its worth?

Whats your opinion?

In a dilemma here. I am more inclined to spend the money on another aircooled Porsche, maybe a Coupe this time, but this is quite a special one and unique opportunity.

I think Munich Legends had a mint low mileage E46 M3 for a sale a couple of months ago, they listed at £18k. It didnt have CSLs and this is private, so maybe around the £17k mark?

That is a complete guess mind.

It may be a decent motor but it's no 911!

An 80s 911 turbo (or at least turbo bodied) over the souped up family saloon any day! :poke:

All E46 M3s are rusting to bits (tried to buy one recently viewed loads of "loved" "cherished""well looked after" examples that were ALL rusting) so a non rusty one will fetch a premium..... unless the subframe is cracked....... or the boot floor....... or the head gasket is going...... or the VANOS bolts have loosened ...... or the crank bearing........

Air cooled Porsche, definitely.

I owned a 2004 M3 with 96000 miles on it for just over a year and it never gave me the slightest bit of trouble. Great cars mate but the 15mpg does wear a little thin after a while hence why I brought the Z. The acceleration and the noise will really put a smile on your face thou. It's only really worth having a car like this if you are going to drive it hard else its really just another 3 series. I find the Z gives me more day to day enjoyment no matter how I'm driving it.

Unless your planning on keeping the miles where they are, it will be worth next to nothing in no time.

From 18k miles it will be quite a while before its worth next to nothing. Infact I don't think any M3 thats been well looked after regardless of mileage will ever be worth next to nothing and wont actually depriciate that far. E36 M3's are still worth reasonable money and not a lot less than they were 3 odd years ago.

When we had a E46 M3 it never went below 23mpg intact it averaged about 26mpg and I found my Z4M to be exactly the same. They are only 150kg heavier than the Z4M coupe not a huge deal.

Tell me why it will be any different to any of the 70-80k models right now going for circa 8-9k and continuing to decline.

This has only mileage going for it so unless it stays that way it only going to depreciate for the next 10 years at least. Sure it's clean but so are some of the higher milers.

The e36 m3 has just started appreciating now and there's a whole lot less of them about than there are E46s. Even then £5k picks you up a good one. So unless the e46 is a CSL or something special then it's going no where but down.

We were just discussing an m3 on another forum. 1 owner garage queen individual Laguna seca with low miles. The buyer had the foresight to get it on a ramp only to find all arches and the sills going. They go inside out due to a design flaw.

You only need air and moisture to cause tin worm so mileage means nothing in that respect.

The problem I had when looking is that the majority are now at an age where the corrosion warranty and the subframe/boot floor warranty (which I believe BMW extended) are now expiring.

There's just something extremely off putting about a car that costs maybe £9k throwing up a potential £2.5k bill for 1 known problem.

I owned one for 2 years. A great car which gave me plenty of smiles. When it came to selling it everybody wants to know if the boot floor has been done or is still part of the BMW goodwill fix. Earlier in the year that was only applicable to cars under 10 years old. If it is cracked, think £££ to fix it!

A 2002 with 18k miles on it is probably worth somewhere around 16k, but any seller would have to wait for some time for that buyer to come along.

The moment you start putting miles on it you can watch that value go south. Double that mileage and it'll be more like a 10k car.

I'd spend my money on the Porsche.

Hmmm tricky sounds lovely a real keeper regardless of potential faults as GQ .. as every car seems to suffer in some way or another these days

Comes down to the dollar at the end of the day if he's letting it go for low teens could be worth a punt ... as your not going to be paying retail at the end of the day

If the running in service has been missed, avoid it.
Also bear in mind that an inspection 2 service is VERY expensive - don't expect change from £1k at the stealers

It's the S54, same engine as the Z4m. Plenty of info about services on here. No need to pay £1000 from a useless dealer if you don't want too.
