Another GPS mount you say…

Here is why I though we needed another thread about this. First, I hate carrying multiple things in and out of the car, and hate having all sorts of devices clipped, here and there. But I digress.

•I have a Treo with Garmin software installed (this way I have one less device in the car)
•I wanted a mount that did not block the AC/ heater vent because I wanted to have the air and make sure the GPS device did not over heat. So vent mounts are out.
•I did not want to leave GPS mount, or the signs of one in the car as to not tempt people to break in to the car. So no suction cups on the windscreen.
•I did not want to leave something useful for some one to swipe when the top was down.
•I did not want to mess up the interior with glue or drilling holes in visible places. So no discs for suction cups either.
•Last, I wanted to have the GPS eye level with the road so I would not have to look down and run over / into something.

So I came up with the following design after seeing something similar online.

and here it is in the car...

It was easy to do… I had to find a cylinder just big enough to fit in the cup holder. After that, a little casting resin, a little paint and a modified phone mount later I had my very own specialized phone/GPS mount.

That's an interesting solution

Does it move around much, also does it weigh much 'cos the cupholders aren't that strong?

Seems like a good idea, but as I understand it, the cup holder is kind of fragile and using it like this I would be afraid it would fail soon. If I forget to take something I am holding in it when I get out, I sometimes hit it with my knee and if I used it all the time, I am afraid I would break it for sure. But I am a like a bull in a china shop, you may not have that problem. :(

In order of Questions asked:

1) It doesn't move at all. The base is bent into an oval shape which jambs against the front and the back of the cup holder and there is black foamy tape around the perimeter of the base which makes for a sung fit.

2) It does not weigh much because of the "casting resin" that I used, I too have hit my knee on the thing while getting in and out on occasion as well but so far I have not had any problems with it.

3) The drink goes on the other side  for now...

Now that I've had a chance to use the thing a few times, even though it puts the screen exactly where I want it, I will fabricate an "L" shaped bracket to mount on the windshield column, I'll post some pics once I have it finished.
