Yep - Another 296 cracked alloy

Hi all,

Had my car serviced and the dealer found a crack to the rear nearside inner edge of my 296 alloy. Said its not covered under my extended warranty. Mine is a 2009 35i.

I'm chasing BMW customer services and quoted them the Watchdog confirmation (from this web site) that BMW would replace cracked alloys but they said it only applies to alloys on the 3 series.

Does anyone who swapped their 296 for something else have a spare rear 296?

I'll let you know how things develop.

Thanks for all the advise on this great site,

Thanks Maniac,

Lets see what response I get from BMW next week.

I'm driving so carefully though there is no loss of pressure. Not sure how big a fight and how long it will take to get them to sort out.

If I do take you up on your offer, where abouts are you based to come pick it up? I would insist on making a contribution to you.

What wheels did you change to? with or without run-flats?

Thanks again,

robbee

BMW should swap it for free if your pursue it enough.

I have a 2009 23i and the dealer informed me that both of my rear 296s were cracked - which they noticed in 2012 during a routine fix of something else. The car was under a Used Warranty at this point.

BMW swapped both out for the new design 296s for free.

All I had to pay was a £50 charge to the dealer to fit them - which I was happy enough to do.

Alloys are not covered under extended warranty, however customer service agreed to test it, and as it was within 2mm on the roll test, they changed it.

May have something to do with previously having 7 alloys changed now :D

BMW Should swap it out and as for the spare 296, I bought it for the same reason so if you need it I'd be happy to recover what it cost me (£150).

I'm making an obvious point but bear in mind the other three could still crack at some point...
Which is why i switched to 18s
