Yellow oil light came on

Hi guys,

Anyone have any idea why my yellow oil light came on after a short drive today? After I parked and turned off the engine, there was a beep. That's when I noticed the light come up on the dash.

I turned off the engine and then turned to position 1 and it went away. After a couple of hours I checked the oil level and it looks fine. I drove home which is about a mile, without issue. The light didn't appear again when I turned off the engine.

Oil was changed around 2 years ago and I have only done around 4k miles since. I'm planning to change the oil once the weather improves, which is when she gets used mostly.

Any ideas? TIA

The manual is more authoritative than my memory. But I think it will do that when it is low, certainly on the N52 it notifies low oil but don't top-up until the dash also says +1L.
But it can happen on uneven ground and give spurious warnings.

Personally I try not to leave oil that long in service, regardless of mileage (unless 0!). Try 1 yr/7.5-10k whichever comes sooner.

From what you have said it sounds like your car has a physical dip-stick.

If so I'd put more faith in that than the level sensor!

I get that light sometimes, check with the dipstick finds its fine, that light seems to be a reminder more than anything to check your level. The level sensor in the sump is not the most reliable. Put a new one in mine but still get the occasional reminder light.

Had the exact same thing last week (yellow oil light appearing on a single occasion, actual oil level fine) - reassuring to know it is ‘just one of those things’

Thanks all! I feel reassured now :driving:

Will carry out a change as soon as the wether warms up. Doubt I'll be doing more than a couple hundred miles until then :D

Get this on my car every now and then usually when I park on on a slight angle nose facing forwards once the car is on level ground I don't get it, but it's a good reminder to check oil and top up if needed which it usually does
