considering one of these as a second car ( 3rd car in household as my better half has a beetle convert). This would make the z more of a sunny day car-how much would i really need to spend to get a good one? are they reliable? what would 15k get in real terms? Its all a hypothetical at the mo, thanks in advance

just re read this- was just a stream of my thoughts- the z would stil get used plenty for running around etc but i may need a more usable car for winter as i may have a new job in a rural location.

I've run a 2001 from new. Bullet proof car with no probs. after near 100k motoring, amazing road presence and performance for a big SUV. Build quality is way ahead of the Zed so no probs there. Heavy on fuel (3.0i) so I'd suggest the diesel and iirc the later models are high tax bands.

The compromise is that the excellent on road compromises and real off road. Sure it'll tow a trailer across a grass field but no off roader.

Very cheap to buy for what you get.

For me it makes a great compliment to the Z4 giving me load carrying, 5 seater and 4WD for when I need it.

cheers phill- knew you would be here to help on this one- whats the best forum for x5s? any real pitfalls to look out for?

xdrivers.co.uk , the sister forum from this one and I happen to be a mod - so be nice :)

I have an X5 as well, the 3.0d which is excellent. 32 - 35 mpg on trips, so fuel is pretty decent and performance is very, very good as well. 15k gets you a 2005 - 2006 diesel or the 4.8 if you want petrol :)

We've had 3 X5's in our household over the last few years and as Phil says, they're bulletproof cars. Never had any problems with them. I'd recommend getting the 3.0 diesel engine. Really is an excellent car.
