Damn - I've been hunting a persistent whistle in my X5 for months and gave up after going through all the regular, intake leaks, holes in pipes, DISA valves, Transmission breathing and the myriad of known 'whistle' issues.
In for a warrantly recall today so I bit the bullet and paid up. After 30 minutes 'told we can hear it but cannot find it', no error codes and all is working well. Still an hour and now £120 later it was found!!!
Can't believe that the bearings on the alternator are generating a frequency that the speakers are picking up independant of the audio on/off and playing it to me in the car just though the front speakers..... Not to be mistaken with any of the usual interference type noises, but a spooky 1 in xx chance and it therfore sounds just as if it's in the engine bay or footwell - clever
Now I just need to fit new bearings or replace, as BMW were not having £400 for an alternator that should be getting spent on mods..
