Would this stop my roof from working?

I was planning on taking the car for a spin today to try and diagnose my steering noise problem (another thread!). Lovely day so I thought I'd have the roof down. I jump in and press the button only for the roof to open a couple of mm and get the red flashing light. Opened up the boot and checked the catches were in the correct position and tried again to no avail.

It was then that I noticed the little plastic rod which attaches to the drivers side catch has snapped.

Would this be the cause of my problems? £25 for a set on eBay so I'm praying it's this rather than the dreaded roof motor failure!

Just to clarify - the roof opens a few mm, you then continue to hear the motor noise for a few seconds but no movement and then the red light starts flashing.

well, without being an expert on the matter i'd say you've pretty much diagnosed your own problem there.

Not seen this failure before. Looks like it may have something to do with the roof not working :wink:
 
I'm hoping it's the reason, would make sense as it leads off the roof manual switch but it could have been broken for a long time to be honest. Was hoping someone would confirm it's "needed" to make the roof lower!
 
No, it wouldn't. That's the dampening strut for the folding shelf supports. The light would be orange if that was stopping it.

I take it the roof motor itself isn't making any noise?

In that case, I would pretty much guarantee that it's sitting in the casing full of water, stupid bloody design.

They normally come back to life once dried out. I've not had one that I've been unable to resurrect, even if they are seized solid, they can normally be coaxed back into normal operation.

Where about are you in the country?

It isn't a difficult job, but access is very limited, providing you fit into the boot in the first place!

The windows drop as normal, the motor(?) kicks in, it lowers a few mm and stops. The motor stops attempting to lower and the red flashing light kicks in.

Agree if I'm going to the effort of removing the roof etc i might as well put a known working motor in.

I'm in Yorkshire.

You don't need to remove the roof, I can get the motor out, bring it back to life and relocate it into the boot to stop it ever happening again in around an hour.
