I have had a urge to check oil and coolant tonight. Been greated with this :/

Now I have only been doing 3 mile runs all week with the weather, been around 0deg for a good fortnight now. Car hasn't been running for more than 15mins a time I'd say. Too scared to cycle with all this snow and ice we had in Bristol! :( so im hoping it's just condensation I have here. But the coolant level has dropped a little; maybe a cm?

Looking for your opinions on this please guys? Should I give it a 20-30 min hoon down the motorway to warm up ? Or am I in trouble?

Oh I was also going to say that I have a rip in the air inlet pipe that causes the ghost whistle. Could there be moisture getting in?

Hi my 3.0 has shown a little of what you have got over the last 3 weeks. Like you I have a 5 mile each way journey and I was really worried until I researched and seems bmw petrol engines do this often. Water condenses on filler cap underside. Mine is booked in for service 1 next week so gues I will know then!. Best of luck to you. :o
 
The type of journeys that you have been doing and the weather we have been having will certainly cause this type of problem. Condensation forming in the top end of the engine.
Also with the short nature of the journey it could be that the water in the expansion tank has not reached its highest temperature meaning that the level you are seeing is not consistent.
Either take the coolant level at full temperature (engine having been running for at least half an hour) or when its stone cold. This will confirm if you are loosing coolant. You need consistent temperatures either hot or cold to check coolant level.
Taking the car for a long run will drive out the condensation from the oil, but as I suspect you already know, you will need to check coolant and watch the temperature gauge like a hawk until you can regain your confidence that you don't have a problem.
Fingers X'd the chances will be that its just condensation due to the short journeys. :thumbsup:
 
Hope so mate! I took it for a bit of a run just there and seems to have cleared up a bit (stupid me forgot to wipe away the crap first) would have continued on but came across another bloody issue that I will make a thread for.
 
There were similar posts last winter, the winter before and there'll be the same next winter, mine, my mrs and my daughters cars show same signs when the weather turns.

Seen the same threads on all car forums I've been on.

Unless you're losing excessive amounts of oil and/or water, forget it.
