wiper blades

I went to halfords at the weekend to get a set of replacement blades for my coupe and they don't list them in there book. I asked the monkey on the parts desk and he said it was a dealer only part.

Surely they dont use a special fitting on the Z4 do they?

And I use the term monkey without meaning any offence to monkeys, just that the guy I spoke to was obviously off visitng another planet as he could barely string a sentance together...

Thanks in advance,

J.

They are standard items. 21" and 20". I can thoroughly recommend PIAA Silicone wipers (avail from Demon Tweeks).

As Sixspeed says standard 21" and 20".

I use Trico Innovision (same as Bosch Icons) available from lots of suppliers on Ebay. Have them on the Z4 and X5 and they're great. Gets rid of the need for the aerofoil but it will miss a 1" stip on the extreme bottom right extremety of curvature if you were to be picky

yep same problem lol

I honestly didn't mind the factory wiper blades... worked real well even at high speeds

Go for the Bosche Icons! They stick to the windshield at speeds in excess of 220 kph

What letter designation on the package do i grab, I see several bosche icons that have the 21" and 20" size. Heck I may just go with the ones sixspeed said.

Hey sixspeed, How well do yours pull dust off the windshield?

I can vouch for these. I had Icons on my previous car and I just put them on the Z4 a couple days ago.

ar perfect, i need help in this department. sixspeed do you know if the coupe has the same wiper sizes as the roadster and would i need the normal wipers or curved on both wipers? are they easy to fit?

21" drivers and 20" passenger 525mm & 500mm - refill is 530mm untrimmed. Same coupe and roadster. I second the PIAA Super Silicones! Cheapest replacement is OE (Bosch) Refills.

Ya'll are driving me towards the PIAA silicones, if for no other reason than they have em on tire rack for the Z4 whereas the bosch icons don't list a specific wiper for the Z4 other bosch wipers yes, icons no. At any rate, I use the wipers once a millenium here in Vegas, so I'm worried about the treatment....

Does it survive car washings or do I have to reapply more windshield treatment after?
Does it matter if I literally use em maybe once a month if that often?
I'm leaning towards getting ones with the mini spoiler.....should i get one on both the driver/passenger side or just driver?

The blades on our freelander were shot after nearly 2 years and i nipped down Halfords last night and ended up with the Bosh replacements.

Also got the blade refills so will replace the blades on the old ones and have a back up.

First time ive ever changed the whole assy normally just the refills.

Cheers

Ps Pretty proud of myself, I Saw loads of waxes and stuff i wanted but held back from blowing cash as im going to order it all off the net plus other bits.

Hehe - interesting to read the desert folk's view on wipers. Here in the Pacific Northwet we go through wiper blades in about a month or 2 given the use they get.

What kills them? Running them when your windshield has a lot of dirt on them. Since dirt is basically a fine grained sand you can think of it as fine grained sandpaper grit that will quickly destroy the edge on the soft rubber wiper blade. I do a quick window cleaning and wiper blade wipe down every day in the winter months before I head off to work knowing that the wipers will be going by the time I get to the end of my driveway.

It is impossible to always clean the windshield before you have to use your wipers all the time so they are basically a consumable item on your car that is destined to die. So far I have found the OEM replacement blades to be a pretty cheap item and they last just about as long as any of the aftermarket stuff out there when they are being used a lot.

Nothing that will safely clean your windshield will be able to keep it's edge intact once they are dragged across a dirty windshield so why spend an arm and a leg for a premium brand name?

Cold weather folks who are looking for wiper arms that won't cake up with ice quickly have a very different set of choices to deal with besides simply getting the water out of your line of vision and I am happy to say that isn't one of my concerns given where I live these days :D

I suspect AlanL is exaggerating on the two months (weren't you?, maybe four!) but, south of him about 150 miles, I know I run through lots of washer fluid and have noticed that my right wiper eventually cleans less than the left !! BMW told me to just drop in for replacements. And, here in the State's, I believe Fred Meyer carries Trico blades. ..dean

Alan, it's obvious you didn't get the OEM BMW trunk monkey to hop out and clean your windows just before it rains. I suppose it's not a PAC-NW option. But the rest of us do. So it's not an issue of dirt, but rather the brand and style of the wiper that's important. :D

Damn - and I thought I got all the useful options. What part number was that? Maybe I can get my dealer to install one 8)

tec243 - my current set have been on for 3 months now and appear to have at least a couple of nicks in the blade edge. My dealer only charges me about $6 for a set of blade replacements so I haven't seen any reason to shop around. GI Joes sells a pretty good selection as well.
