Winter Tyres

Anyone out there a weather expert? I have purchased 4 x Continental TS 830P winter tyres for my beloved Z4. So the obvious question is when to put them on as I don't have spare rims like I had for my last car. I bet now I have spilt the cash it will be a glorious winter with no snow or serious cold spell.

I reckon its going to be a mild winter like last year. One or two cold spells but that's about it. Shame really as I love a bit of slow motion drifting in the snow.

Also where do you live?
 
I'd put them on now to be honest. I've got my winters on, usually 1st week November every year.

I'd recommend you try and get a spare set of rims too, it's much quicker to swap (free at my local tyre place, they even store them for nowt) and easier on the rubber too - no re-balancing needed.
 
I live in the East Midlands near Sheffield. I do a 35 mile or so commute each day which involves city centre, motorway, dual carriageway and rural roads. Mrs C insisted I get them as rear wheel drive and bad weather can be interesting experience!
 
weathers not been below 11C all week over this side of the hills. the only slippy thing ive come across are the leaves down my road and no tyres are going to help with them. wasnt there some prediction of it being the coldest winter in human memory a week or so back? or is that the usual doom/gloom that follows the glorious BBQ summer we always get told we are going to have?

Just this week fitted my winter wheels with non RF's - the improvement is immense.
 
I have a set on cheap 17" alloys but didn't use them at all last winter, the weather just didn't warrant it, no snow and mild temperatures. As has been said above, I reckon this year will be more of the same but nice to have them there if needed as they can be quickly swapped on.
 
Speak to Mr wilks and get a second set of wheels.

Makes the whole process much easier for swapping if you have a second set of wheels.

Generally your regular tyres would start to struggle when the weather dips below 7 degrees...so it depends on when you do most of your driving at the moment!

I have a driver while working in Ireland and he has a full set of Winters on a high end Lexus. Purchased with them, so he thought he'd leave them on. Was 13c yesterday and the ride was appalling on the motorway and very noisy...

With that said, there are some that just swear by winters all year around, somewhat counter productive for a z4 though.
 
For sure - many vehicles focussed towards difficult conditions such as proper 4x4's may encounter, have variations of tyres between Winters, AT's and even MT's. You probably don't notice it so much with the noise and handling characteristics of their set-up

As you say counter productive on a Z4 and they won't last long driven hard in warm weather.

I've bought winters for the Tiguan and I plan to leave them on all year round.

I dont drive it hard so I can't see there being much difference other than stopping distance in the warmer months.

Looking at the forecast in the east for the next 7 days I will stick it out until next weekend before fitting.
