Winter Tyres Question

Hi all,

I'm thinking of putting winter tyres on my wife's Golf this weekend. However, at the moment, the front two tyres are almost due for a change anyway and the rears (quality Michellin) are almost brand new.

- is it reasonable to just put winters on the front? (bear in mind, i'm not going rally driving, this this just an alternative to putting two more normal Michellins on the front, - which i'd do anyway in spring).

Kwik Fit say 'all four winter tyres only' - but normally they know screw-all about anything!

Thoughts?

the danger of doing just the fronts is the car spinning off (particularly under braking)
because the rear wheels have much less traction.

I would be fine with that personally but pretty uncertain if my car was to be used by anyone else.

Thoughts ?
Many will shout "No way should you ever mix them " but i ran our MK5 Golf Gt last winter with standard Avon rears (5mm) & a brand new set of front winter Accelera,s http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Accelera/Snow.htm
with zero issues plus when the snow came the car drove through 3/4 inches no trouble & never felt unsafe even at speed
I,m also currently running our X3 with all season Pirelli Scorpion,s on the front with standard rubber on the rear , again no issues

As the temperature seems to stubbornly refuse to go below the 10 degrees mark it should be fine.
The ABS should take care of it if the rears want to lock up.
