Need some ideas for winter commuting car approx 45 miles per day.

Not going to chance the icy roads and snow in the Z4MR. (clearance poor and dont think i can get winter tyres for it)

Need a decent mpg with enough over taking poke.

Thinking subaru xv...fiat panda 4x4 ....skoda yeti...honda civic....golf tdi...volvo s40.

Budget upto 15k with the need for reliabilty.

Winter tyres are available in plenty of sizes, including for the Z4M.

Just a question of whether you really want to get the Z4 covered in salt, and whether you stray off the beaten path.

Personally, mine's used all year round, rain, sleet or snow. Keep meaning to buy winter wheels & tyres, but never even had reason to use the sno-socks I carry.

Might try again to find winter tyres then for the z4mr.

The salty water and the roof mechanism dont really sound like a good mix.....thanks for the advice though.

I've a 320d as a daily hack but it's rubbish in snow as it's RWD. Have you thought about something like a Range Rover Sport?

My wife has a non turbo imprezza which she has run for almost 5 years and it's been very reliable and copes with the worst of Scottish winters really well. So I would look at the XV. But I'd also consider Freelander 2.

With that sort of budget you have a big pool to choose from.

I'm definitely biased but I'd have a Defender CSW. You'd get into an early Puma which is more car like so would easily gobble up your commute.

The bad weather ability is without question and they are great fun but a huge benefit is the miniscule depreciation.
