Just get any cheap car and put some winter tyres on it :) it will be as good as any 4x4.

Tim.

+1 - I now have Agnes (named by the original owner, a friend of mine)........a 1999 Nissan Micra 1.3 Auto with 75 stampeding horses.........46k miles, FSH, and all for the princely sum of £200! So far I've covered 1,500 miles without any issues - this is going to be my winter/bad weather/tip etc car......

Also opted for nissan micra 2002 plate auto 1 litre....1000 miles only as good as new. Have Waxoyl the underside and gonna get some winter wheels. :)
Should last me ten yrs of depreciation free commuting.. 55mpg winter/bad weather hacking. Great little cars...their light with narrow wheels ideal for the snow when got proper tyres on. :)

The humiliation for me was the winter of 2010 when I got stuck in the 1 Series so carried on by foot in a blizzard, I watched this old chap in a clapped out Mini Metro bombing through the snow without a care in the world. Decided last winter there was no way I was using the Z4 so put some all season tyres on the Z3 and it sailed through last winters snow. There is something very satisfying knowing you can carry on no matter the weather without the worry of sliding off the road :)

Quality....i too used to have the 1 series but tried the old bag or 2 of cement in the boot trick to get me through.

Now with the Z4mr i dont want to risk the salty water and iffy roof mechanism combination. Plus keeping the miles down through the winter commute.

Plus like that old metro i dont really care , takes alot of stress out of the driving. :)

I've got a Freelander with some brilliant Yokohama Geolander tyres. They have little zig-zag teeth!
Never misses a beat.

I still have a Y reg petrol Diahatsu Terios (I was selling it now I have the Evoque but it's so handy to throw stuff for the tip in and the mountain bikes!). It has been awesome on the snow over the last few years! Had to get it welded up underneath this year as the salt finally took it's toll I think (it hardly ever gets cleaned to be fair!).

I would buy another though.

I had to take a look at what the heck that was... I found this advert. I love the 'Very ECONAMICAL' quote, then I flicked to the MPG tab to see 25MPG kicking about. From a 1.3 !!

32mpg combined (your stating the worst urban figure. If it was a Z4 you were looking at you would have quoted the combined!) :P Still not great for a 1.3 but it is permanent four wheel drive.

Also the road tax is quite high! Still a great car though. Never had anything wrong with it mechanically and it's always passed the MOT! During the non-heavy winter days the furthest it travels a day is 8 miles (less if I pushbike to work). I should really sell it now to be honest.

Love my RR :)

Just check out the suspension which can be expensive on general items , other then that all is good
