wing mirror glass

Hi guys, my drivers side wing mirror glass has come off :-( just managed to save it (phew) any idea if I can just stick the glass back on or whether I need a new glass? the actual mirror isn't damaged, its just come away from the adhesive backing.
Thanks

These things are built crap... mine did the same and its simple to put back if a little fiddly. Luckly the heater mirror wires saved the glass from falling off!

You need to twist the locking boss in the mirror anticlockwise and then position the motor so that you can hold the mirror glass into the boss flat. There are some holes the pegs need to seat in flat and finding the correct position is frustratingly hard as unless it is perfectly flat in the holes you cannot lock it it. At the same time (get a helper!) you need some stiff wire to bend into a hook, near the top of the boss is a tab with a notch, hook this (tricky!) and then firmly pull it clockwise to lock the mirror in.

It can take quite some effort to lock it completely and is well worth finding some stickyback material to replace the old pad - its the locking boss that holds the glass on but the sticky pad helps stop it vibrate loose again.

I guess the firm ride shakes the locking boss loose over time - as does opening and shutting the door as mine was also the drivers side that fell out.

There weren't any wires holding it in ? Its like a flat sticky plate...there is a circuit boeard on the back of it but no wires sticking into the mirror at all....

Hmm sounds different to mine, I had two wires for the heated mirror but don't recall any circuit board.

Do you have the automatically dimming wingmirror option or non heated mirrors? A picture might help if you have a camera :)

Wouldn't like to say without a photo of the wing mirror and the bit that fallen out :D

I'm wondering if your glass has detactched from the fixing which then goes into the locking ring/boss described above... in which case I think the wires are still attached to the bit left in the wing mirror and its probably not going to work again unless we can come up with a good way to repair it

Yeah, that sounds like whats happened, I have the glass with nothing attached to it, and the backing is still in place.... :?

BMW couldn't believe it, they had heard of the whole thing dropping out but not just the glass LOL.... anyway I've stuck it back on with double sided tape ... :? hope that holds it...

So why don't they put out a recall then... its dangerous! :headbang:

Ah did you buy the metal ones from bmw like I did? Found a little bit of grease on the threads fixed that but they were a sod to get off as they corrode on with all the salt on the roads.

Grip between forefinger and thumb and twist until it gave in :D hurt a bit though, especially hard to grip with the 108 wheels and the recessed valve stems!

Its no use, they won't budge, gave in and took it to a local garage I use and they can't shift them either LOL..so they are going to whip the tyres off and replace the valves...... plastic dust caps from now on :x
