Wing mirror falls off after touching it. Looks totally ruine

Hi,

So I've had my 2006 Z4 2.0 Convertable about 3 months from a dealer. Brushed past the wing mirror after parking (no more than you ever would, didn't even bump it) and it just popped right off. I thought it might have been loose or something so I didn't freak out... Until I looked at it. It wouldn't go back on, as it's been totally sheared off before, and looks like it was cheaply tack-welded back into place.

I've left it hanging off because i don't want to cut the wires off incase they are needed for a replacement/repair.

Can someone shed a bit of info on this for me?

Am I within my rights to take this back to the dealer as its well outside a normal wear and tear usage. I didn't do anything, there is clear evidence of a previous botch job repair.

Aside from that, if I get nowhere with him quickly il need to get it fixed as its drivers side and VERY dangerous to drive. How much (ballpark) am I looking to get a new one fitted or am I best trying a breaker?

Thanks for any time/responses you folks give me.

Cheers,

Mark

have you asked the dealer?

Mine looked the same after someone clipped it.

240 gbp from stealers rings a bell but it was a few years ago.

The new assembly comes with un painted shell.

As for the wire. there is a plug on both ends so either take off the door panel and un plug or dissassemble the wing mirror and find the ends.

Bolts to hold the bracket on are behind the tweeter.

The holes in the new one for the bolts are not threaded so worth putting the bolts in once off the car.

Unless you can get one from a breaker

Thanks mate, £240?!? Fucking hell.

As the whole thing is fine except for the bracket I might try and just get the metallic bit replaced if that's possible and see if that can be found cheaper.

I think I'll see about disconnecting it and taking it off before it falls off and smashes.

So annoying when I didn't even clip it

I would be straight back to the dealer with it, 3 months is nothing (I had good-will repairs on mine well after that). If you don't mind sharing, which dealer was it (if you don't get anywhere, others would be interested in their response) ?

Small consolation, but lucky it didn't happen at hooning speeds  !

I that was my car I would definitely expect the dealer to replace that.

As stated before it is better to discover the issue in the way you did. If that came off at speed that could cause a whole lot of damage!

Good luck getting it sorted...

Cheers guys, they have repaired a windscreen wiper issue about 2 months ago with no hassle, so I'll call him up on my lunch and see what I can manage. It's A690 Specialist Cars in Durham (North East England)

I'll update after I've spoken to him.

If you have no luck with the dealer then you can buy one (the housing, excluding the glass) from bmminiparts.co.uk for about £145 (compared to the £190 from the dealer). Of course it'll have to have it painted & fitted.

However, if you've got the electrically-folding mirrors then you're looking at double that price from bmminiparts/bmw dealer (about £300/£400 respectively).

Fail, iPhone posted early.

No mine don't fold. I have all the housing and glass it's just the metal bit that I need I think.

Would ideally like to just get that.

The only parts of the mirror available separately are the housing & mirror itself - the 'drive' and joint are not sold separately, so you'd have to find a good one or one with a damaged housing on ebay/partsfinder and make a good one out the two. Unfortunately when I was looking, all the ebay ones were either the housing only for £20-50, or the whole mirror including glass for around £200.

If you can just get the metal bracket from the scrappy you should be fine to transplant.
